MP5500- HDD options, press roller release

Original 80GB Hitachi Deskstar 7200rpm is bad. Can we swap in a 250GB IDE drive (or bigger?), format and go?

Fuser pressure release mechanism, quite a racket like metal teeth grinding but don't see the cause, motor removed spins fine and all gearing runs smoothly with motor removed, no chips in teeth etc. could replace all 8 parts of the drive mechanism and the motor but seems like more parts than necessary; anyone heard of this, its loud as hell and throwing intermittent SC codes / motor lockup.

If 250g is too big, you should be able to use a jumper to clip the HDD size.

If you replace with a Hitachi drive there is a tool to neuter a larger drive so the machine's BIOS sees whatever size you specify, so in theory a larger Hitachi drive can be used. I found some Ricoh machines that took 40G drives that actually had 80G in them and was able to get access to the full 80G after using the tool.

      It is called 'Feature Tool'.

Never had any trouble replacing HDDs with larger ones neither had to swap any jumpers or use any tools, so it should work fine just by pluging it in. But, as always, your mileage may vary.

If the isolated motor runs fine and the isolated fusing unit turns fine, I'd guess you've got either some chipped/broken gear (only slightly, so as to pass a not-so-close inspection and manual movement) or either the motor or the fusing unit are not well seated against eachother.
