    D014 - D009/11/12/13

Alright, I thought I would wait and see if anyone else would post anything about this, but since I noticed this morning the D009 info... I couldn't stand it anymore.

What do all the Ricoh family techs think about the new machines launched this month?

Personally, I am ... That is with the exception of the D014/15 family. I mean, it seems more and more like Xerox everyday. A machine is launched and right behind it, before one even hits the streets, theres a line of tech bulletins flooding the lines. Since it's release, early this month, there's already two bulletins. The fact that one of them is a firmware update to address a new feature, that's puts this machine in Xeroid territory for me. Even though it is priced lower than the family it updates (B132, this machine is not currently off the market based on the latest price sheets), I worked for Xerox for almost 6 years and this was "normal". Other than the these two TSB's, I am very interested in this machine. I have spent a lot of time looking over the mechanical changes and think they are all good. I personally think if will take this family to the next level in the market place. That's a good thing!

As for the D009 family... I am just tickled to death! Even though every other tech in our shop b*tched when I told them that it had a web assy similar to a 2560/8055, I simply told them that if that was all they had to complain about, they had several assy's to practice on around the shop and in the field! None of the other techs at our shop work on color, except me, so... This machine is a whole new animal to them. At first I was a little upset at the PCU/Dev design, but when I saw that it was different from the G065 family(folds open as opposed to sliding apart), I was sold. The fact that they improved on that design really made me happy. Everything else is almost just like the B222 family, so... I was happy.

Of course, only time will tell, but I am really excited about the direction that Ricoh is going. Not only with the machines mentioned above, but a few others. That's what's important! I can stand behind the machines that they are putting out and, not only that, but taunt some of the features. I am stoked! What does all the other Ricoh techs think?

Firmware is the bain of our lives as so much is done at a software level now.
So those kind of RTBs will come thick and fast for most new MFDs.

I do like how they are doing away with the reg clutch on slower models and replacing them with motors now, that is a change for the better.
As is having the option for colour scanning on B&W machines, looooong over due.
Phasing out the Aficio 3224C and replacing it with a lower speed MPC is also good move if a little late.

But what I'm liking the most is the range improvment at the lower end of the market.
Like the new Gelsprinter MFDs and the smaller higher speed B&W and colour laser printers.
There is some real improvement going on there, but they still have a long way before they make the likes of H.P, Epson, Canon and Lexmark take notice.

If they have the life between calls of the recent machines we will all be very happy.
Only problem is untill we know how long the PMs take for example everyone loves the c4500 mc's untill they need a full pm and the machine is out of action for what seems like half a day compared to the 2238c or 3245c which were an hour, hour and a half for a pm.

It won't affect the companies, but it might affect us engineers out there in the field and our figures.

Firmware and rolling mods both hard and soft is a fact of life to keep the prices down. If a friend asked me to recomend a MFD, nearly always I think I would sugest a model which has been out in the field for a year as the R and D seems to be done in the first year in the field.

I do like in the d009 series the idea of a 2000 sheet lct instead of two seperate trays. So many of our customers only have A4 paper running in the machine.

This major leap forward maybe explains why the mp3500 and mp3500 was so poor at basic copier things like quality of copy, i guess most of the top r and d people were busy on this series.

I am still concerned about the toner. It looks like these machines suffer from the same problems of the mp3500/mp4500's.

Yes, they finally admitted to that being an issue. I've had one that I replaced developer, mag roller and entire developer units on them. The symptoms go away but ultimately return. I'm still holding my breathe that the SP changes actually fix the problem.

My gut feeling is that the developer or toner will need a change in the formula to actually fix the problem. I'm hoping I'm wrong on this one.

There is a TSB regarding the issue also. # 012 or # 007 if you're interested.

Before you go to far, check the price change on the PCU's compared to the old design. You might get some sticker shock. The change is phenomenal for a new machine in the same segment.

Even tho they have changed the developer and toner a few times, it seems that the 35 and 45 cpm always have the same issues with supplies.
The MP4000/5000 uses the same toner and dev as its predecessor MP3500/4500, which was supposedly a big fix.

Aye, and unfortunately the MP3500/4500 have caused us a huge problem, the toner is a different concoction to the DSM635/645/735/745, but they both still come in the same bottle. A thing I've come across a few times, if a site you go to has a good mix of these machines, for the love of god tell them to check the model number on the bottle before they put it in! First one I saw was a sod to track down...
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

                  Hit it.

                    Criminy, me too!
Even after I explained to the customer that the toner for the older machine and the new one were the same.
Got a call the next day for light copies.
I finally saw the problem when I removed the PCU and observed that the fricking bottle wasn't turning. Still not understanding, I pulled the toner motor and matched it with the bottom of the toner bottle.

Anyone have any luck after performing the adjustments on the service bulletins? I haven't had any flare up yet to try it out.

Changed a 9040, 9050 today and one of our techs changed a 8035e yesterday. We will see!

They do explain it's a temporary fix and it's more of a 'delaying' tactic for the problem re-occuring rather than a actual fix.

The final solution is still under investigation.
