    MPC2050 - very sloooowwww reaction

We have about 4 of the MPC2050 machines that have worked fine since new. These have started recently to react erratically in the sense that if for instance you load a copy job and hit COPY, the machine will wait for between 10 to 30 seconds (sometimes more) before the engine starts printing. This is not limited to copy mode, but also happens in print, or doc server mode, as well as internal prints such as config page prints.

We have tested with different controllers and hdds, but it is intermittant and comes and goes, so you are never sure that the problem is fixed. We have also loaded the latest firmware that is availible via Ricoh. With no improvement.

One would reason that it should be a HDD or something to do with the controller or IPU as this is where most of the processing of the image data takes place, but like I said no improvement.

Has anyone had this and come across a fix yet? This will be much appreciated, as this seems to become a small epidemic right now.

Re: MPC2050 - very sloooowwww reaction

Well, I have no sure reason why that would be happening, but here's what caught my attention:

    - It happens on the machine irregardless of what function you're using (copy, scan, print, etc);
    - It happens on more than one machine (you mentioned a small epidemic)
    - You replaced controller boards and HDDs without any effect.

With all that, I'lll throw a wild guess here and speculate that this situation is caused by some bug on the firmware introduced recently. If you can pinpoint the first time that bug ocurred, I'd try on one machine (perhaps the one with most ocurrences) to downgrade the firmware to a version launched prior to that date.

      Mrwho

you make a valid point. I will try this and report back what we find. I have checked the firmware history list and don't find any reference to slow response or a fix for it, so you may be on to something

Is it possible you have a voltage issue? It almost sounds like something isn't getting power when it should, or enough at the right time.

Does the SMC show any background codes at the times when the machine lags?

I will request the tech involved to extract SMC reports from all the machines in this state.

Other then firmware I can't think of much that affects all processes, slow printing can be driver issues. Not sure ram would be affecting that or not.

I somehow also suspect something in the processing line, because if you power the machine down and then back up, it seems ok for a while before the issue returns

Ok, so far we have (just to be sure) upgraded ALL the firmware on the machine to the latest that Ricoh has on offer, and still this machine is as intermittent as hell

I have checked the service manual, and there was mention of slow printing with certain versions of firmware, but I believe we have another problem here.

We have gone as far as chaging the controller as well, with no improvement. I believe the low voltage and high voltage psus are next!

If globalscan is installed you can get a slow reaction time as it connects to the server for every operation.
We have a legal client that had their I.T. clean out their server software and have now inherited a slow reaction time into all their MFD's.
I guess the moral of the story -- if it's not broken don't fix it.

Does the problem also occure if you disconnect the machine off the customers network and hook it up directly to your notebook, doing some test prints. Once I had a customer with some kind of related issues. I checked his server rig and some clown must have plugged a network cable in his switch - unfortunately with both ends, haha...

Of course it's hard to fiy something if the problem doesn't occure frequently enough but you might have a talk with the customer and suggest they should try unplugging the network cable if the machine freezes during copy jobs. You can also try deactivating every not-needed network protocols inside the MFP settings.

The first paragraph of the post states that it happens in 'copy mode' as well as print

Check the settings for process control and fuser idling.
You can turn fuser idling off if they don't have the machine in a cold environment.
Process control settings at default want to check TDC and Gamma before each print job.
This causes slow print start, wastes toner and tends to create a buildup in the IU that causes POOPING of toner. (Periodic Obvious Observation of Paper Infested Negative Graphics).

I keep telling customers that it is a technical term.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?
