Aficio 2238 - no paper sign on.

Dear all,
I have a Ricoh Aficio 2238 which shows intermittent "no paper sign on" especially in the morning.
The thing is, when this problem occurs, the customer will have to pull out & then push in the cassete tray to clear the "no paper sign ".
Any help is appreciated.Thanks

Sounds to me like there is a problem with the paper lift mechanism. On some machines (when they get older) they don't lift the paper enough as the machine is consuming sheets. It could also be that there is something else wrong with the paperlift so that the plate drops back down while copying is in progress, which will make the machine think that the paper is finished. When you open and close the tray, the machine lifts the paper back up to the paper end sensor and the machine "sees" the paper again.

I would check the paper lift mechanism to see that something is not broken or malfunctioning.

I would start by replacing the paper lift motor

I have found a few of these that the paper tray becomes warped or somehow out of line (due to age I suppose), and they just don't always make good contact with the switches at the back, and pressing in on the paper tray, or closing it a little more firmly allows the tray to lift. There may be a better fix, but I've solved it by simply sticking some foam padding on the rear of the tray in line with the switches to allow for better contact between them and the tray

The Clip behind the drawer is broken or the holder in the frame is cracked, so the drawer pops out just enough that the paper size sensors lose contact.
Usually happens to Drawer #2.
It is caused by customer slamming drawer full of paper.

The problem was as you mention. I did the modification (seal) at the rear of the tray & the "no paper sign on" dissapeared for good.

I managed to did as you mentioned & solved the problem. It turned out to be paper lift lever which was not activated when the cassete was pushed in. I added a "seal" at the rear of the cassete & the "no paper sign on" dissapeared!

Glad you got it fixed, though most of the credit needs to be given to the guys (Polarbear, sandmanmac and nmfaxman) that posted first with the correct solutions. I was fortunate to have the relevant bulletins that addressed your issue.
