    MP 3350 Jamming

    Im having problems with a number of these machines jamming.
    The jams are are at paper feed ,that is to say the paper is not getting out of the cassette.
    The customer opens and closes the side door and the jam clears, they might do this for a number of copies and the machine will work fine on a run again. Then the problem might reoccur a week later.
    These machines are well maintained with low volume, tyres,friction pads and clutches have been changed. Firmware is up to date.

    I noticed in the manuals that the lift motor assembley has been modified, I wonder could this solve the problem . I will fit same and see.

    Anybody experiencing these problems.

    Re: MP 3350 Jamming

    You might have a bad paper width sensor. This usually get along with a wrong paper size display or timing jams IF the automatic size detection is enabled. But sometimes the user just set the size manually within the user tools and then you get feeding issues because the machine still uses the automatic paper size detection to select the paper cassette lift-plate pressure.

    To make a long story short:

    - you might check the user setting and make shure "automatic paper size detection" is enabled for all trays
    - check if the paper size and orientation gets detected properly
    - in case the detection is bad - check the paper width sensor, these like to fell of or getting a bit loose, there's also bulletin suggesting to add some mylars to prevent this from happening

    The paper size detection/sensors are OK and you still got problems?

    - make shure the friction pad has been installed properly, sometimes it stucks with a mylar from the cassette
    - check the paper-lift mechanism, especially the long spring and that bracket-thing that grabs into the cassete to lift up the paper. Maybe the plastic is cracked.
    - the side fences shouldn't sit too tight at the paper stack

        Common problem, see attached bulletin. Sensor in back of tray gets knocked out of place from slamming tray into machine, and tray doesn't lift up enough to allow the roller to grab the paper...

        Reinstall the sensor, and add the indicated mylars, or some other means to keep the sensor from popping out again.

          Yep, real common on these machines.

          You will know if the above post about the bulletin will fix it as the paper size will display A5 with A4 in the tray.

          More than likely from what you have written im guessing it only happens when the paper tray is very full? If so remove the back panel and tighten the lift springs by about half a turn. Just use 2 pairs of long nose pliers and twist the circle bit to apply more tension and hold the paper up higher in the tray. Will make sense when you see the springs!

          And while there glue the sensors in place the above bulletin refers to cause they will be sure to pop out sometime....

            Armature sensors at the rear of the cassette all the way, had a few issues on earlier iterations of this engine (af270, 1027, 2027 etc) with a split in the gear on the lift assy but on these newer boxes it's usually the sensor's come unclipped.

            My solution? A bit of superglue on the clips of the sensor. Problem solved.

              Thanks for the tips guys a combination of the sensors and also possibly the paper guides screwed home too tight.
              I have now moved the problem on. The machine is jamming in the duplex at paper jam location -25 'Junction gate SN: L'.
              Swapped around the sensors in the duplex unit, but still jamming. This machine is wreaking my head....

                I never had duplex issues with these. Does the duplex jams occure every job or just sporadically? Does the paper just stop for no appearing reason or does it look more or less scrunched up like a "traditional" jam?

                I know from older machines that the junction gates like to stick at the rubbers (that are supposed to reduce the noise if the gates hit their end positions) - but I can't recall having this issue with the recent machine generations. Still you might try to mask the rubbers with some scotch tape (to ensure a proper surface) and do another test run. You might also check if there are one way pulleys invovled in the duplex paper path drive and check these.

                  I had one just today with duplex jams, the lower gate pawl has a tab that the solenoid (left side of the fuser) pushes, the tab was broken off, I am guess it was not the customer either because the tab was laying right under the solenoid arm. I was able to superglue it back on for now but I ordered the the hole pawl its like D3694664, otherwise if thats not it does the model have a finisher with bridge i have seen bridge switches go out and cause jams.

                    I'll second the broken tab. I've replaced a number of these. I can't speak for how it happens, but I have a really good idea after watching one of the users clear a jam just as I got to the site for a different problem on the machine.

                    I think what happens is when the customer gets a jam, they open up the duplex section, but don't put it back down before closing the access door. They close the door, expecting everything to fall into place. It does, but the front pressure arm of the fuser actually pushes on the gate tab when closing the door with the duplex section open. Eventually the pressure arm makes its way to it's proper rolling surface, but only after putting a fair amount of pressure onto the gate tab first. This looks to me like what is happening, after I tried doing it myself, slowly, and watching.

                      A bit late to the conversation, but..

                      Something else that happens is customers will push the left paper guide in the tray hard up against the paper. This can cause the paper to become wedged where the lifter mechanism has problems trying to lift the paper. The other issue is the guide can be a bit too loose where the paper falls off to the left in the tray and the roller can't grab it.

                      Also, on the broken tab, most customers not only leave things open, they have a tendency to shove it close from the front. I try to train them to push it shut (not slam it) in the center (9 dots on the plastic) of that right door so it closes square. If you don't the fuser pressure roller release arms can get bent over time and the door just becomes harder and harder to close until eventually they bang it shut and something breaks. (If not the tab, then one of those arms).

                        ::: Unofficial Modification :::

                        ::Fault ::
                        Solenoid Tab on the Switch back guide is repeatedly broke off.

                        :: Cause ::
                        Very weak catch clip/lock on the inverter inside flap door assembly, allows the entire inverter flap/door to fall forward while closing the duplexer.

                        ::Remedy::
                        Place a cable tie around the duplexer inverter section flap/door, to hold the flap/door from falling forward when the user closes the entire duplexer. The cable-tie is affix very loose so the user can pivot the cable tie off the door handle so they can remove any paper jambs.
                        The cable-tie is place around the drive shaft of the duplexer rollers directly under then over the user handle marked with blue colour coding.

                        ::Secondly ::
                        Turn the very front duplexer main hindge about a 1/4 of a turn to stop the user from pushing the duplex off it's main hinge mount.
                        The user can be in a hurry and push the duplexer close from the front top corner of the duplexer door. This causes the duplexer to twist
                        as it closes on a diagonal direction. The lower main hinge has enough movement to pop out and cause the duplexer to miss-align as it closes. Turning the front/forward main hinge 1/4 turn removes any extra movement in the duplexer main mounting hinge.
