[CQ] MPC2800 style charge rollers, who else cleans them?

    almostdone.jpg

    Picture shows one almost finished.

I use a brillo pad moistened on one corner with rubbing alcohol, and then wipe away the dirt with a clean cloth, turn the roller a bit and repeat.

I've done it a few times on older color machines to get out of a jam. But I've always replaced the drum unit in short order, so I don't know how long it lasts.
I got the idea from older threads on CTN, so there at least there used to be others here that cleaned charge rollers like that.

As long as the lubricant bar and the drum are in good shape, I've never had an issue.

The key to life is NUFINISH car wax!!!!!!!!!! great for charge rollers and drums, and the platen glass when originals don't slide across the glass.

Great tip! I've never tried anything like a wax before to clean them. Makes sense.

We clean them with water, then wipe excess off with a dry cloth or it comes up with a code. We then mark the PCU, and when the lines come back we know its already been cleaned so we change the PCU.

We get around another 30k pages by cleaning them, however every now and then we get one that comes back the following week so its a bit of a gamble....

Remove the coating from the charge roller with a dishwashing scour pad and methylated spirits .
Wipe clean with a dry cloth.

They work fine for ages when cleaned properly...

Hint: pop the springs out of the charge roller cleaning roller otherwise it can get messy...

Exactly the same as our procedure, sometimes we may even clean it twice just to keep the machine running.

2nd time almost certainly means that a new pcu is on it's way though.

I think it's the 4000 and 5000 were we've started stripping the enamel off the charge roller and leaving it bare. so far this hasn't turned up any faults and some of them got cleaned a long time ago now. I'm pretty sure the senior engineer was told to do this by Ricoh

Re: MPC2800 style charge rollers, who else cleans them?

I can't speak for this Ricoh, but alcohol and brillo are typically fatal to most of the charge rollers I see. The roughest thing my charge rollers will ever see is a cotton cloth, and the strongest cleaner is non-ammonia glass cleaner or water.

The outer skin on these charge rollers can be torn easily, then you might as well throw it away. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                  1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                  2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                  3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                  4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                  5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Repeat calls suck, so we just replace the drum unit normally.

If it's a low volume customer and I'm not in a hurry or simply have not brought enough drum units along with me I will clean them.

We did a trial of stripping the coating off with a scourer and wiping them down with glass cleaner, also we removed the cleaning roller and cleaned out lube bar area. It really does work and you can get 50% to 100% more out of the pcu.

Ricoh put out a bulletin on cleaning the charge roller. TSB D023/D025 - 022. If the machine is already over 100% on either page count or rotation count, replace the PCU. Other wise you can clean the roller with a soft cloth moistened with water. To protect the cleaning roller from geting wet, either remove the springs holding the cleaning roller against the charge or roller a couple of sheets of paper between the charge roller and cleaning roller.

Ooops, I misspoke. Not a BRILLO pad, a scotchbrite pad is what I used. You can see it in the picture.

As for the rubbing alcohol, haven't noticed a difference between that and water, and if you end up with rubbing alcohol on the "foam" cleaning brush by accident, it dries quickly unlike water which would be a problem.

Removing the springs from the cleaning roller is a good idea.

According to Ricoh, alcohol can be distructive to the charge roller.
