Use this app to format for Ricoh machines, fat format: SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Formatting Software | Download | SD Memory Card | Digital AV | Consumer Products | Support | Panasonic Global
    Mystic Crystal Revelations

This might be stupid, but have you tried realigning the touch screen?
Take this with a grain of salt, as it might not be correct, but I think you have to press the "#" key, then the numbers "1993", then press the red stop key five times to get to the screen that has that option. I've found a plastic tweaker ground to a point helpful when I've had to realign the touch screen, for what it is worth.

        It's true Iowatech.
Vargue has made no mention of performing the calibration, which is a must after replacement, and I've not heard of firmware ever being the cause of this particular problem. (correct me if I'm wrong)
As for the procedure to access the adjustment, you're VERY close, but it's Clear modes, 1,9,9,3, clear/stop (5 times).

About the SD card, format it in FAT format.
Also, don't use Windows XP or earlier Microsoft based machines, there was a program that needed to be downloaded for formatting SD cards for Ricoh firmware updates on those computers. I'd tell you what it was, but the computer that contained that information died last year, and I haven't used the program in years. And hopefully you are using something newer.
(Actually, if possible, harvest the SD cards from Ricoh machines that are going to be scrapped or broken down for parts. Those SD cards have always worked for firmware updates for me.)
