I don't think I was illegal before or after, we used to sell lots of refurbs on the understanding that it was a 2nd hand machine with all data of the previous customer wiped, including the meter.

A manufacturer I am familiar with makes it possible by changing a couple of parts, this "hack" was possible on machines made twenty years ago and still the same on modern machines. The manufacturer also supplies one of the parts to facilitate this to dealers they like.
So whether it's illegal or not seems to depend on where you live.
I am not talking about Ricoh.

If you want to do this on a HPM479 just read the service manual !!

Guess it's not illegal as long it's been documented and agreed to all parties - still it has a strange taste if people do this and it's even funnier to read the explanations like "it's easier to bill the customer if the contract starts with zero" and BS like this. Noone would buy a used car with the meter set to zero because it's more "convenient" to know how much you are driving as if basic arithmetic is rocket science.

At the end of the day these zeroed machines are probably getting sold within a little "fairytale hour" implicating they are returners from short leases with little usage.....
