These may not be toner belching beast like the 6501, but some of the so called improvements to maintain optimum print quality will cause them to consume excessive amounts of color toner, around 13K instead of 29K. The waste toner container will not go the quoted 128K. 12K to 15K is about what you can expect. I have 6 machines that I have to take of. The first four were Ricoh national contract so we were not aware of the toner problem at first. After we delivered the other 2 that are under local contract, we quickly found out about the toner problem. My boss quickly saw that we were losing money of them with the amount of color toner they were using. I went to the other customer, only about a 1/2 mile away and printed the SMC log data and the toner bottle yields were the same. We had our regional out last Tuesday and he is submitting the problem to the engineers. What I have deducted from one of the bulletins is that you get the best life if the customer is making 10 pages per job or more at a coverage of 6%. Any thing below 10 P/J or 6% coverage, the machine starts going into toner refresh mode more frequently in order to keep the toner in the development units fresh. Obviously above 6% coverage more toner is going to be used but it will be going onto the paper and not into the waste toner container.
Thanks for this warning, my first thought was "WHAT!" When I first stumbled over a filled Wtc after 12k, so really nice to know that this is "normal" behavior on this model.

Thanks also for the update on the toner situation. The machine is being used by a printer who tends to do quite a few copies and easily over 6% coverage so hopefully not to many empties between services. They are 40 miles away so may order a couple of spare bottles.
