MXM3070/MXM3071 Series Struggling with Gritty Print and backgrounding

    Hello Fellow Techs,

We have a bunch of Sharp Mono Copiers from the 70/71 generation that always develop strong grey backgrounding and sometimes even gritty print, print job comes out feeling almost like sand paper. Clearly pulling developer right onto the page. This was not an issue with previous Sharp Mono copiers for us. Any tech tips for these. When we service them for this issue we change the following

OEM TONER IS ONLY USED and Firmware is Updated!

    MX609CH/ MX609MC/ MX560DR and MX561NV

then run 25-02 and a full calibration

This fixes the issue but, I have a lot of machines where the problem will return within 6-12 months and with less than 50,000 pages being printed. To me it looks like too much voltage is being applied to the charge unit and can even burn the drum or charger out.

    any tips would be appreciated!

Be sure to keep the image density sensor, under the transfer roller, clean. I have started teaching customers where it is and how to clean it to reduce service calls, especially for out of town accounts. Also, if you are changing those parts out too often, you can substitute the MX609CH and MX609MC for the MX560MK to save a little money. On the accounts that you're seeing have the problem more often, maybe also replace the transfer roller. I've seen transfer rollers on Mono machines cause backgrounding before

Check the condition of the mag roller when doing your next developer change. After you vacuum the unit make sure there is no build up on the mag roller surface. I have found in higher temp/humidity locations toner melts to the surface of the roller and causes poor developer/toner adhesion. If you have a strong enough solvent you can clean them but once the build up starts it usually comes back fairly quickly, ultimately, replacement of the developer unit was required in my case.

Thanks for the Tip, I will add it to my checklist!

I remember Sharp telling me not to use the MX560MK because the charger is actually different. I think there is a tech doc about this.... I used to use it and stopped using it. Thanks for the transfer roller tip, I'll check those going forward in regards to this specific issue. We always clean those density sensors !

I've been using the MX560MK in place of the other two parts for quite some time, because we couldn't get the MX609MC for a while, and have never had a problem. Looks like the parts manual shows that the last digit is off by one between the charge unit in the MX560MK and the MX609MC, but they both seem to work fine. I don't believe I have had a backgrounding problem on any of the machines I have used the MX560MK in, but I do remember a few when using the other two parts

be sure you are doing quality calibration with SIM 44-2, 44-6, 44-27, 44-26 and 46-74. watch out for toner build up on the mag roller. we are having a mass problem with this which leads to quality problems, toner dusting. F2-78 errors and we have not yet determined why.

Thanks, we have been doing these extra quality calibration steps for many years . I've had better luck if I use the MX609MC over the one in the MX560MC kit, even though they look the same. Others say that has no effect...

I find if I change the Developer, run 25-02 and change the main charger at the same time this greatly extends the life of the drum unit. Especially if the developer is 2-3 years old. other than this issue though these machines have been alright for us.
