      Hi Steve,

      Yeah I'm in Gloucestershire.

I looked through the service manual, there wasn't a flowchart for what to do in my exact position, most of it was for if the screen was working or general stuff like try a different power outlet!

I've just been able to see that the HDD can at least show what partitions it has etc under disk management on a window system. I guess that doesn't mean it doesn't have bad block or whatever.

I think I need to establish if the MFP is getting power at all. Not sure how to do that when you have to push the whole thing into the machine to get it to work. You said there were lights on the MFP, I'll try and see if I can peer inside and see anything when I've got the disk back in.

Take off the back panel of the machine and then I think there may be a metal cover over over the cage. Take that off and you'll be able to see the MFP board in situ. If you have strobing lights then you have an issue with the boot program or MFP board. No lights and you have a power issue (DC power supply)

These machines boot from the SD card so thats your 1st step (unless it has the optional data security card installed in which case it boots from that)

Just gotta bite the bullet and replace the SD card. If it isn't the culprit, it will be soon enough. Terrible design, should have never been booting off SD cards.

Ive had this symptom on a few machines in the past. One of the RAM modules on the MFPC board could be bad.

I don't suppose there's a way to test for this is there? Would it boot if I removed one of them and restarted, then the other?

Also at this stage wondering where the best place is to get spares as the MX-5141N is getting on a bit now. I'd love to keep this one going for a while yet if I can!

Stevew57 is selling one on eBay
kinda pricey, in usa. Needs to be SPECIFICALLY mx5141, unless you just want to use the SD card and RAM chips, verify with seller first

                  Sharp MX-5141 NIC Board / ethernet Controller also MX-5110N, MX-5140N, MX-4410N

Sadly, attempting to boot from a cloned SD didn't work, tried a couple of time with different SD cards according to instructions and image that Steve Tech very kindly sent.

There's not a practical way to test it. By the symptoms, it is most likely a bad sd. Data transfers can corrupt sometimes, and data might be different for different markets. It might be best to contact your local Sharp to get a proper sd card.

SD card, Hard drive or MFP PWB. You need a preprogrammed SD card for it to work. If you try a HDD it should be totally blank first and at least the capacity of the original (it can be bigger but not smaller than the original).

Hi, I've tried a mirrored SD from an image and instructions kindly sent by SteveTech. Are there other images or methods I could try? I dont have access to an HDD image. Is there a site somewhere witht these sorts of disk images, do you know?

Would still love to get this old girl back up on her feet!

Since you already unplugged the HDD and it didn't boot, it has nothing to do with the HDD itself. There used to be a small board attached to the MFP PWB that was just basically "extra" storage, that you could remove, and see if anything changes. Otherwise, start removing the cards/ram/rom chips that are on the MFP PWB, one by one, and see if you get a change.

We use HDD Raw Copy to copy a good SD card to a blank(we have saved images), update the firmware after install if that fixes it. The HDD you need a new blank one or a used one that has been run on any software that can write 0s to it. We use active kill disk for the HDD. Here is a working image for the SD card(see attached, unzip first)
