    AR-407 scanner issues

    I have an AR-407 we picked up to repair in the shop. When making copies it intermittently throws an L3-00 code. It happens randomly through the DF or off the glass. It makes the full copy scan, but the scanner slows down and whines when returning home. That's when the code pops. The scanner motor and control board have both been changed twice (together), and the scanner wires have been replaced. The pulleys have all been checked, as have the bearings on the pulley shaft. The scanner returns at about 1/4th normal speed when it errors. Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

    When I first started working on Sharp machines I was dismayed to find that the scanner cables were loose to the point of falling off. For the first few months I snugged up every scanner cable on every call.

    Then I started getting the L3-00 codes. Up until then, I had worked on Mita, Ricoh, and Canon. The scanner cables on Sharp products cannot run as tightly as the other machines I had worked on.

    Then for the next few months I had to go around and loosen up the tension. Not to the point of falling off, but not as tight as a Canon.

    What sort of lubrication are you using on the rails? I have had good luck with straight weight 30W motor oil (like for the lawn mower).

      Checked the tension as I read....they are pretty taut. Will try loosening slightly. Using good old tri-flow as lubricant. The rails were cleaned well before it was applied. I have a PCU board coming from one of our other branches, but while I wait I'll play with the tension a bit. Will let you know.

        Re-learned the valuable lesson of "check what the technician before you did". The motor and scanner board had been replaced, but I noticed when checking the tension that the belt was sitting oddly. That damper between the motor and the bracket is a useful item.....good thing I had one lying around.
