ARM455N ROM update NG FPDL-52 error

Updating ROMs on one of these using PC through USB cable. Right away get a NG message so I ran the test for the memory and flash ROM's. That is when I get the fpdl-52 code. Looked in the manual and online to see which one of the flash roms this is but no luck. Getting ready to swap out the ROM's one at a time and run the update again (have a complete set from a good machine) but was hoping to cut down my time if someone has seen this code before?? Does not have the data security kit so using the standard ROM update that I just downloaded from SharpIDNC and it worked on the previous models updates I did that day. Thank you in advance for any help in this matter.

Firstly, have you got the correct firmware to match the Flashroms in use? You need to use the 'elm' firmware extension if your flashroms are the ELEM type (LF stamped on the back). If there is no LF stamped on the back, you use the regular firmware version (without the 'elm' in the file name). The Jupiters can use both ELEM and Non-ELEM flashroms. Your different machines possibly have the different rom types???

Have you set the dip switches on the MFP to write mode? Are the Boot & Main flashroms in the correct sequence?

I totally know that you know what you are doing Bil.... I'm just listing a few common faults done by techs when firmware upgrading this series of machine.

I understand totally about the questions. I've been known to do some major brain farts in my time!! LOL To answer your last 2 questions first - the switches are in the correct position (both microswitches) and I get the proper LCD screen that I switch to the update via USB and I have the boot and main roms correct.

I was not aware that there are 2 different styles of flash roms as there is only one sfu file in the n1.17 ROM update package, I will check this AM to see what we have. I have gotten the FPDL-52 flash rom error message before on a machine that has the data security kit but this unit does not have that installed. Just for S&G I tried the m1.17 data security kit upgrade and it still showed NG.

Thanks wazza for the response and it being fairly late over there as well!

Ive never done the updates via usb because the network flash is so easy anyway. Have you tried that?

I have the n1.17 version for the N model of this series which is the most recent from Sharp.

Not hooked to a network but I can set it up and try and let you know the results.

just had to ask out of habit. does this machine have data security on it? if not id say corrupt boot rom as well. u can verify that by doing a slot to slot copy of the boot rom from another 355n and putting it back in the imager, if you have another one around.

Actually have quite a few so I will try that also. Does not have the data security kit. Thank you all for the tips.

i regularly make spare sets of roms for all the machines I have in the field. Never know when u need em. the 455 will copy any rom slot to slot. very handy thing to know, and i dont know of any other that will do that. if it were me, id pull the roms, copy them from another 355n and then flash over the network. dont have too many of those flashes come up NG.

                        How'd you go Bil?

Just for your reference, I can download both the ELEM & Non-ELEM firmware for the n1.17 version that you need from here. They are both visible on the Australian site no problems.

My experience with this series, getting NG errors usually occurs when sending the wrong type of firmware to the flashrom, even though you have the correct version.

If you need the ELEM or Non-ELEM, I can send it through to you. Just tell me which flashrom type you have in that machine.

I'm going to stay quiet on this one. About 10% of the time on Sharp machines, the firmware just doesn't take, and I don't have a clue why. All wazza's tips are good ones. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Thanks wazza. I went back to the Sharp site here in the US and they only show the one firmware with file name n4.06_elm.sfu from Oct 2009. I didn't get a chance to work on the machine today but if you could email me the non-elem firmware (I think) I would greatly appreciate it. bilyahner@frontier.com

Will let you know what happens. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Sending you through the original type (Non-ELEM) n1.17 right now.
