There's more to it. On machines that have only a two digit display, the display may look like (for example) "E7", then when you press the Start key it displays the sub-code (for example) "04". In this example the code is E7-04.

You're almost there. So far you've given me "E?-88". We're only missing one digit now.
I'm going to make a wild guess, that you're code is E1-88. That's an E-sort time-out communication error.
A simple reset should get it going. Try this: Clear > Interrupt > Clear > Interrupt > 14 > Start.

You should press Clear Key > Interrupt Key > Zero Key > Interrupt Key quickly. The Copy Quality Display will goes out at this moment.
Enter 14 and press Start Key to finish the reset procedure.
