AR-405 help a fellow tech out please

I've been working on these AR-405's for many years and still have a handfull left out in the field, came across a problem today that I have not seen before, maybe some of ya'll can help me out I hope.

Customer calls and says having intermittent blank sheets and machine stops, so here is what it is doing upon my arrival :

I start a run of 20 or so copies off the glass or ADF- problem same,
machine runs a few fine, then spits out 2 blank sheets of paper, then stops and says "please check the paper size indicator adjustment of tray", then immediatly says "press start to continue". So press start again and same thing keeps happening over and over.

So I switch trays back and forth, top and bottom cassette ports same issue, adj. all size indicators at rear of trays back and forth, mess with paper size indicator spring buttons in machine, swap paper feed stations, cleaned sensor board at vertical roller area by waste toner bottle, --- all no help...

But machine will run fine all day through bypass tray... ???

What do you guys think ?

My first inclination is thinking maybe the paper speed change unit is bad, but it is not crashing the paper like most do that give problems.

Re: AR-405 help a fellow tech out please

There was a tech tip about this problem on this machine.
    ID : AR405-12808Model : AR405S
    ym
Blank sheets inserted in copy job. Display momentarily reads Check cassette paper sizeSolution :
    • PPD2, at the PS roller, is used to monitor the length of the paper as it travels through the imager. If the length is read incorrectly, the above error will occur.
    Cause :
    • Check operation of sensor, it may be bouncing. Check for mechanical sliping such as the PS clutch.
    Hope this helps.

After all you did... only thing left would be the clutch pack, I mean they were so troublesome.

I've got something sort-of similar. Maybe it fits, maybe no.

        You decide:
Voids in the crossfeed direction, 30mm & 10mm from the trail edge of letter size copies, on the first copy of each set, only from tray #1 & #2, not bypass, on AR-287. Vertical feed clutches overdrive wrinkling the trail edge of the paper. Replace the Paper Feed Drive Unit.

Is the tray properly identifying paper size? This was common on the Canon fax-L5000 and L7000, and more recently on a Lexmark printer. They almost all use momentary push switches to identify paper size in the tray. If the same size is in the same tray for a decade, the couple of switches that are always used can become intermittent (not close to 0.5 ohms, sometimes as high as 160 ohms closed). In most cases I have scavenged enough of those momentary switches to swap out the individual switch or two on the board. I'd start metering out the size detection PWB.

        Just an idea. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
        5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

My vote is with Brewster's answer. I fought with one of these problems but it has been awhile. The registration rollers do wear in the center which could also allow the paper to slip though but that is probably an extreme case. That sensor is in a good place to collect paper dust. While cleaning it, put the extra turn on the actuator spring. I believe that if you remove the bypass unit & developer unit and take the screws out of the front side of that PS assembly, you can get access to that sensor without pulling the whole PS assembly.

I think the registration (PS) clutch is separate from the clutch pack and is in a spot where it can get toner & developer in it. It's a lot tougher to get to than the sensor. The fact that it works fine from the bypass would make it seem like a clutch pack/speed related problem but if my memory is right, I would try registration first.

I have one still left out in the field as a rental, it has 800k on it and has been a money maker for me. Most of these machines were not as fortunate.

The Sharp AR507 was one of the worst piece of shits ever made and when a customer pays 12k for a 50 ppm machine that does not make it 2 years... you got problems.

I thought I would post the fix to my problem, it ended up being the registration clutch.

Thanks for letting us know. I too have a few of these left out there and the refresher might come in handy.

I have a similar issue, but only from one tray, and in mi case i fix it replacing the lift motor.
-chek from another tray, if works good, change the lifts motor and get a conclusion.

                    good luck

I am almost 99% sure that your issue is in this boxes.
