    MX-M550N "Please Wait" Intermittently Displayed

    Hello All,

I have a MX-M550N that intermittently displays "Please Wait" in the screen. The customer states that this message will appear at various times of the day with no apparent reason. The message will stay up until they unplug the machine and then turn it on again. When interviewing the operators this seems to occur more when they are faxing, but this could simply be their perception not based in fact. I am inclined to believe it may be a hard drive failure causing this. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

    Background information on the machine:

    1. This is an off-lease machine that was delivered to our customer, so I do not know the entire history on the machine.

    2. I replaced the entire fuser unit (Brand new) prior to delivery.

    3. This machine has a Data Security Kit installed. MFP: m.16 Boot: M1.7A PCU: 01.11.D0 Scanner: 01.01.D0

    3. This machine has 620,567 images printed on the unit. The current P.M. count is at 62,345. No body jams or diagnostic codes have been displayed or recorded.

    4. The 20amp outlet has the correct voltage at the time I checked it. No voltage between neutral to ground.

    5. Sharp indicated that the fuser thermistors may not be pressing firmly on the rollers causing the problem. However, I would think I would have seen "H" codes recorded by now.

    6. The fax option is connected to a Digital to Analog converter box for faxing (State agency) since they use Cisco VoIP.

    7. The machine has been at our customers location for 1 month.

If copier has finisher, try pulling staple cartridge. Staple home position can cause please wait. Also copy process issues can cause please wait. Try disconnecting fax or finisher for a day, with customer approval..
    Good luck

Thank you for the advice. I failed to mention that this unit does not have the stapler finisher option installed.

A good first place to start would be to double check the thermistors, make sure they're clean and making good contact. A secondary assumption would be the hard drive as you were already assuming on both parts, seems to be you're on the right track.

Does it have an LCC? What's the finisher firmware? Version 1.10 was released to correct a "please wait" error for the Saddle stitch finisher

I'd also double check the temp/humidity sensor.
            Hope that helps !

Re: MX-M550N "Please Wait" Intermittently Displayed

I replaced the fuser with another new fuser unit from Sharp and a new hard drive on 11/15/12. There is some distance involved, so I wanted to cover these two possible avenues at the same time. I contacted the customer again today and she said it was still occurring about 2 to 3 times a week. The voltage and ground to neutral showed good again when I was there. I have not seen any error codes on the 22-6 print-outs.

Unfortunately, I have not seen the issue and I still wonder if it is adding toner, but she states the code will not go away until they turn the machine off and back on or unplug the machine. I was thinking of installing a power filter just for kicks? Chasing ghosts again. Any other thoughts?

Was the HDD from Sharp or a spare one from an old PC? What size is the drive installed?

I would almost be inclined to think that it may be the DSK that's causing the problem. Perchance a defective ROM chip... I had a DSK on an MXM363 and my PRGM2 Boot ROM failed due to corrosion (it was in a public pool, against everyone's wishes) and the machine would no longer boot. I wonder if the symptoms in your case may be relevant.

Would have to advise removing DSK and seeing what happens.

I ordered a new hard drive from Sharp with the updated part number. I knew about possible chip problems on the old style hard disk drives, so I opted for a new drive. Thank you again for the information!

It's worth noting that the DSK for the MXM550N has a Main F/W of Ma16, not M.16, it seems like someone already tried to remove the DSK.
Looking at the FW release bulletin, there are many fixes for printing issues including queue lockups, issues printing certain PS files, problems waiting for connection to external print server device (if fitted) and a few random problems all solved between M.15, M.16 and Ma16.

You should ask the client if the scanner lamp is ON constant when this message appears constant, if so then it may indicate an issue with the SCN board, but it would appear the firmware and ROMs are your issue.

I haven't seen this on the MXM550's however I have had several MX-2600's do the same thing and every time it is the MFP board.

check for firmware updates on everything. Especially the fax kit and the data security. They may be conflicting. Try dong a 66-10(image clear) and see if it goes away for a while.
