    MX-C401 Orginals being read

I've got a MX-C401 having a weird issue. Any thing that goes through the feeder will hesitate 4 or 5 seconds before being fed through. When you press start machine will read "Originals Being Read" at the top of the screen and have the orange "Waiting" in the bottom left hand corner. It will do this about 75% of the time. The other 25% it will work correctly. When it does this the original has not even started feeding yet. The scanner will light and move back and forth about an inch or so and then it will pull paper through and make the copy. It will do this on copy, scan or fax.

I tried firmware first and it was still acting up but then out of the blue started working correctly for about 10 copies before it started hesitating again. Cleared all system settings back to default and checked to make sure all soft-switches were at default. I've swapped the fuser out just to see if something was going on weird with a thermistor and also swapped the feeder because at first it seemed like you could play with open/close sensor and get it to work(Turned out to be a coincidence)

Also checked outlet to make sure everything is good there. It does seem when it's working that if you put it in power save mode and bring it back out it will start malfunctioning again. Doesn't give any error codes or jam. Black drum and DV was replaced by another tech the day before it started happening. All counters were cleared and no other settings were changed. I'm going to try a different drum(Maybe something going on with main charge?) and possibly a board if we have one compatible. Sharp suggested a HDD Wipe. Haven't tried it yet, doesn't really make sense to me but I will probably do this as my next step just so I can say I did when I call back.

Anybody ran into an issue like this? :BangingHeadAgainstTheWallSmiley:

    Re: MX-C401 Orginals being read

It sounds to me like a memory issue, either RAM or HDD. =^..^=

Edit: A dear friend of all of us at CTN has pointed out that the issue with the scanner sometimes waiting before start of copy/scan/fax send, is totally to do with energy save mode. That scanner is basically like one of those small & basic Canon or Epson home scanners placed on top of a printer. Its not a typical copier scanner with lamp assy, mirrors & CCD. Its a little all-in-one device. When it moves back & forth about an inch, that is the scanner lamp warming back up. When the copy/scan/fax send immediately starts, the scan lamp is ready. It just comes down to a coincidence if the scanner is ready or not at the time.
When you extend the pre-heat & sleep timers right out much longer, the issue is hardly there, however it still does do it. The engine pre-heat/sleep mode is different from the scanner. But, when the timer is extended out, get ready for many future fuser & fuser drive gear breakdowns. These boxes love going to sleep quickly, and that helps extend the life of everything in the plastic-fantastic frame.
Have seen this issue for years, no firmware update, soft-switch setting or system setting timer adjustment can or will fix this entirely.

My reading of this is that this "MFP" is just a scanner sitting on a printer with their own separate warm up cycles. The only time there isn't a delay, is when by chance the scanner and printer warmed up at the same time.

It sounds to me like you have two choices:
    1) Up the energy saver settings and stock up on fuser parts, or
    2) Live with the delay.

    Tough choices, both. =^..^=

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Thanks for the quick reply Black Cat and I agree about the Plastic frames and cheeziness of the scanner section of these machines.

Energy Save is set to 120 minutes with Auto Shut Off unchecked. I'm used to seeing this sometimes on these machines but this one is a little ridiculous to me. Tested several different machines in the shop and while they will go through this process every once in awhile(mostly when being pulled out of power save mode) this one is almost a continual loop of waiting with it every once in while being good to go.

I went back out today with a different drum and dv unit since that was replaced the day before the issue started occurring. Also took a transfer belt because we had a weird issue a years back that a transfer belt unit was causing. Also wiped the HDD and tested machine before I reloaded info and reflashed firmware. No change at all.

Updated ticket with Sharp Support and they had me try changing a soft switch for Dust Correction with no change in machine. I took video of the issue in copy and scan mode. There next suggestion is Scanner Control PWB. I'm thinking either that or the scanner unit will probably be the fix. I'll upload the video here shortly.

      Thanks for the help!

They used cheap glue for the white reference strips on the underside of the platen on the 401s and 311s. When the glue ages, it will turn grey or blue sometimes. Perhaps it is scanning a dying white reference strip. Of course this machine has no way to remove the platen; the whole scanner must be removed.

You nailed it on the head Mojo, I was starting to think in the same direction. Took the Scanner PWB and a Scanner Bed with me. The scanner bed done the trick. Split the old one in the shop and taped a piece of paper on the bottom side of the glass just to see if it would act correctly. Never misses a beat now. Thanks for all the help!White Ref-C401.jpg
