AR-M237 very poor quality when using doc feeder

Copies are fine when original is placed on platen glass but quality is poor wit 3 inch black area when using doc feeder. When original is change from feeding landscape to portrait the distortion goes the other way . Optics and laser shield are clean. Is this electronic rather than optical problem. Looked in Sm and saw 46-20 adf exp adj . This a is for a technician friend who called me from customer's office. He primarily works on Ricohs.
I don't recall having seen this problem before and I am drawing a blank. Please help. Your input is very much appreciated. My friend has helped many times on Ricohs. Frank/ActionPhotocopy

Tell your friend to make sure the white reference plate on the bottom side of the glass is clear, and then he can either power cycle it or perform sim 63-1 to check shading.

Off the glass, the optics being parallel aren't as critical as through the doc feed. Make sure all optic adjustments are right on.

Thank you for your assistance guys. I don't recall ever having done a 63-01 simulation or 63-07. Please advise. Are values automatically adjusted by simulation or does he need to enter values. Is 63-01 adequate or does 63-07 need to be done with document cover open and white sheets on glass. Manual does not appear to be informative enough. Frank

Spoke to friend and he said there are other issues on machine which was a donation to a non-profit org. They won't be spending the money to fix so we won't know what's causing the quality problem. Thanks for your help. Frank

I agree with you and had a customer just like that 2 weeks ago. To be fair to this customer they depend on donations/memberships(historical society) and when they got the machine donated they did not know about the various problems and costs until my friend went there. Unfortunately,as you know, many people are not donating gives but getting rid of problems. Frank

Isn't that what donating means? Giving your problems to someone else, or at least, that's what the norm usually is - hence everyone's big obsession with garbage sales.

I've seen this issue on a much later machine, try doing an a3 copy from the platen and you'll probably notice towards the end of the a3 page you'll see the dark area coming in.

make sure the mirrors are all in the right place, they can move about, it's a weird fault but I did fix by reseating mirrors especially on mirror base 1 strip it all down and reseat, then square up the optics, clean the rail and your charity work will be done plus copier karma will be on your side...

Thanks Chris but customer does not have the money to spend to repair machine as there are other problems that were realized after this one. Good info. Frank
