    Usually developing....

On Cougars, background is almost always a developing issue. I have six things for you to check:

    1) Background, heavy gray, along the front edge of copies & prints, immediately after changing the toner. The effect diminishes over the next 100 copies. Extreme overtoning. Worn toner feed roller allows large amounts of toner through. New roller measures 16mm. At 550K roller is worn to 14.5mm. Install new foam spacers onto new roller. Replace the toner roller (NROLP1211FCZ1), or hopper assembly (AR-280, AR-285, AR-335: CBOX0117FCF4)(AR-250, AR-281, AR-286, AR-287, AR-336, AR-337, AR-405, AR-407: CBOX-0117FCF5)(AR-501, AR-505, AR-507: CBOX-0117FCF8).

    2) Background, heavy gray, along the front edge of copies & prints. Voids crossfeed @ 36mm intervals. Also loud gear noise. Main drive assy may have been replaced recently, on AR-405. Developing cylinder is siezing up, stressing the gears in the main drive assy. Replace the developing unit, developer, & main drive assy (if damaged).

    3) Gray background on 50mm of the trailing edge of the original, intermittently. Static electricity builds up on the copyboard glass & white belt. Originals intermittently cling to the curved part of the white belt, creating a shadow. After cleaning the copyboard glass apply Pledge Dusting Spray to minimize static.

    4) Multiple imaging at 125.5mm intervals at copy front on AR-405. High fuser temperature. Dirty sub-thermistor. Clean thermistor. Lower fixing temperature 190 to 185C.

    5) Multiple imaging at 205mm intervals on AR-287. Not cleaning the drum due to wear on the drum. Replace the drum (AR-336DR) & blade (UCLEZ0149FCZ1).

    6) Smudge on the backside of prints & copies, along the trail edge. Fades away after 5 or more consecutive prints. The white paint wears through on the pre-transfer guide plate. Toner collects on the bare steel, possibly because it is retaining a charge. Replace the S/T corona unit.

    Here's a good place to start. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.
