e-Studio 450 series, running REALLY hot...

I went up to one of these today (C-970 code, unrelated) and felt the area above the Fuser... This thing was running hotter than HELL, EVEN AT IDLE... I've had customers complain about this before, but I've never realized what was going on. On this particular machine, the telltale signs of EXCESSIVE PAPER CURL were quite evident as well, and they were using good fresh paper.

Is there a problem with the Thermistors on this series box, that makes them run too hot...? Or has someone (prior to me) been messing with a 05 code...?

I don't normally change Thermistors preventatively (except on the e-550/520 series) at each Fuser rebuild, unless they look really bad. Now I'm wondering if this alone is my issue and I should just change them out, or is there something else going on? I expect defective Thermistors to code out, but I notice that this series box does not throw many fuser codes.

This machine has about 280K and the Developer Unit looks BAD.... Do most of you guys REBUILD or REPLACE these units? Which is cheaper/better?

    Thanks in advance!

Check you other post for a reply.

As to which is cheaper/ better (I did not answer at the other site) it depends on what it cost you to purchase versus what needs to be replaced. A full rebuild (all bearings, seals, gears, mag roller, doctor blade, housing and misc seals/mylars) is about $50 cheaper then a whole unit but will take 1-2 hours to do it all correctly. If you just need the seals (end of the shafts at the housing) and gears then you can save a lot and only take 20-30 minutes.

Usually if it only looks bad but is not leaking toner/developer and is making good copies then I let it ride.
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

Make sure the fan is plugged in and running on the fuser unit. I get a lot of customers on this box say it runs hot, I think it's the nature of them. The e45 a very similar machine used to cook the covers. If you are really worried about it I'd change out the thermistors and thermostat. Unless they are visibly damaged or I suspect they are causing a code I hardly ever change out thermistors. On this model sometimes (e45 especially) though you would get a hardened/broken-up/scalded plug on the exit sensor, or the sensor itself... that sensor plug is part of the same wiring harness. That's a bigger reason I change out thermistor assy. on this model rather than thermistor related.
I will not give you service manuals or firmware.

For the paper curl on e280, e352, I've replaced the press rollers and that problem seems to have been alleviated at least for now.
