"Add Paper" in tray #1, but only when tray #2 is inserted!?

Huh? When the enduser told me, I thought she might be mistaken since it sounded so ridiculous. Then she demonstrated. With tray #2 inserted, both #1 and #2 say "Add Paper". With tray #2 withdrawn, #1 shows it has paper and feeds.

Oh yeah. You probably want to know what kind of a beast this is. It's an eStudio 3510C.

I can't really explain why it presents this way, but I have a clue. This machine has a single lift motor for trays #1 and #2 that drives CW to lift one of the trays, and CCW to lift the other tray. There's a post on the lift motor gearbox that sheared off, so tray #2 never lifts regardless.

There were no lift errors. It sounds like a quirk in the firmware. Isn't that strange =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

That is a weird one, but I think you're on the right track. Those lifter assemblies like to break, I always carry a rebuilt one with me and a set of gears for them, too.
Why does every customer think they're the first one to ever say: "you've been here so much we should get you an office, ha, ha, ha"?

Check tray which is added paper It makes other tray say" add paper". I had repaired E 850 has the same trouble. when I add paper in tray 1 and push it then tray 2 displays "add paper" Finally checking tray1 was stuck while motor lift and all gears in motor lift unit came out. because the customer set A5R size in tray 1 and used A3 end fence piece to block end side of paper. when motor lift paper salver was stuck because the end fence piece is large in A5R paper size. I chge another piece the trouble has been solved.

I did think of that. No paper behind the tray, trays set to auto detect standard sizes, tray guides set properly, and standard sized papers detected size properly.

I think I can rule this one out. There is no A5R paper loaded (and it's not a standard size paper for the US anyway), and the fences have not been altered, but thanks for commenting. =^..^=

The left side paper shifter is most likely stuck between both stacks of paper. Remove paper from left side and slide the paper shifter to the far left and reinstall the paper.
