You need more than a serial cable. The newer laptops do not have a DB9 serial port, so you use an adapter that requires software loaded and the adapter plugs into the USB port , the serial cable plugs into the adapter. That is why we use the Belkin adapter as it always works with XP. Have tried many other adapters, but none work as good as the Belkin. Again, we set the adapter to port 1.

    Did you open GSN lock?
It could be the date on your laptop if it's an old one.

Because i know that many of usb adapter have problem to connect with machines.
This is the reason that many of us use old laptop with serial port.

I use the old standby adapter, Belkin F5U409 for XP. This has proved to be the best usb to serial adapter for these machines. And yes, I always set the port to #1.

Check serial cable that connect with your nachine.
I suggest you try another cable.
