On the 5000's, we used to shim the left hand hinge with 2 of these horseshoe shaped shims. FC8-9927-000
I have never attempted it with the 550, I tell the customer to place the feeder fully upright and it will stay, the 5000's could not normally be placed fully upright. To place the shims on the 5000's, remove the 2 hinge brackets from the back of both hinges, 1 screw each.

i think they came out with new type hinges for ADF/DADF back in 2006

Replace them.

Or try the shims.

Its really not that big of a deal.
