Make sure all the contacts points on the frame of the machine that contact the cartridge are where they're supposed to be.
It wasn't a 607, but I had an HP that we tried 3 different cartridges on, and it ended up being that one of the little metal wire contacts was pushed into the frame (not protruding from it) and not contacting the cartridge.

Never have had to replace the contacts.
Have you tried a different transfer roller?
Not much else to check. Cartridge, Transfer Roller, Fuser is about all that can go bad.
Have you tried just running like 30 pages through it to see if it gets better?

After talking with another technician he says, "not to rule out the Print driver". I have not personally run into this (and doubt it's the reason), but something else to look at I guess. Just Uninstall and then Re-install driver on computer. I guess the easy way to check this before uninstalling the driver is to print an internal print (config page, supply status, etc.) if it comes out dirty, then it's not a driver issue.

Afterthought: They aren't using MICR cartridges are they? Hate those things.

Do you have a genuine HP cartridge to try?

The fuser can also cause a gray background if it's not getting to temp. Just because the fuser is new doesn't mean it can't be faulty.

No replacing the HV contacts. They run through/part of the chassis.

                  Transfer roller is a possibility.

Most probable cause are the aftermarket toners.

thank you so much for the replies. not micr, internal print has background also. i was able to get IT to place a loaner, so i ordered the power supply and dc cont. i believe this happened when they plugged it into a ups. the display screen was blank and the background happened at the same time. plugging it into the wall seemed to fix the display, but not the background.
the hospital will only use aftermarket toners, and it was ok up until this happened. i will update as soon as i install parts.
again, thank you so much for the professional replies.

never put a battery back up on a laser or copier.. it will beep every time the fuser fires up and will destroy the batteries after a while

not just HP.. most brands suggest NO UPS or surge...

this is the only surge that MOST companies agree with.. and the provide a warranty

                          SURGEX Power Protection and Conditioning

have them get a certified electrician in to check power

I had an instance a year or so ago, in which a client suite had (4) M607 printers, and all were producing defects similar to what you describe. Conferred with my fellow technicians and managers and nobody could come up with much of anything.

With nothing to lose, I did a firmware upgrade on one printer, and that eliminated the background defects. Upgraded firmware on the other 3 printers thereafter, and that resolved the issue on all 4 printers.

Firmware for the M607 series can be downloaded here:

I Really appreciate the replies. so far ive had 3 607s with the same symptoms. the last one i replaced the lvps, which seemed to fix all of them. i did try firmware, but perhaps that should be done proactively. THANKS!
