Anyone have any ideas on this old dog? Tried to update firmware thru usb but will not accept it. ANy other way to do it? or Ideas how to fix this problem other than rolling it out to the curb!
You can put it into emergency firmware update mode and send it over parallel.
It's a two part process. Haven't done it in MANY years, but, there's a "firmware" file and a "disk"(?) file. Kiran......can you correct me if I'm wrong, please?
Well for starters, 79:04 doesn't mean there's a problem with the firmware. It means there's a problem with the printer that the firmware doesn't have a specific error code for. Updating the firmware is unlikely to resolve the issue. That's not to say you shouldn't update it; the 500 has an issue with certain-dated printheads where it will reject them, and HP put out a new firmware to resolve that issue. I would only apply it IF you're experiencing a problem with new printheads being rejected.
Lance, I'm not sure what you're describing; it doesn't sound familiar to me, sorry. You can just send the .fmw file to the printer by copying it to LPT1 at a DOS prompt but the printer has to be ready to receive a print.
When does the printer give the 79:04? On startup? When sending a print? Can you get into the service menu (power up holding up and enter?) If so, do the the (limited) tests pass, like the carriage and paper tests? Have you tried powering it on with all consumables removed? (Inks, printheads, paper.)
I havent looked at it yet. The customer was trying to diagnosis it himself before he placed a call. i was trying to do them a favor. i will ask more pointed questions. I was hoping it was a common thing that the error code points too. i did see a post that it was a non descipt error code. I dont want to waste anyones time, thanks for the input. I normally tell them that it needs a call placed but they are a new customer. Thanks Hoosierdaddy
On the 79:04, if it comes up when they send a print, they probably have a driver issue on the PC. Other than that, I'd need more details about when it occurs.

Hello Kiran,
i got problem with mny DJ500 too.
Yesterday it said that one of Printhead is going to be out of warranty.
Today my DJ dont even start up and said 79:04 error.
Do you have any solution on this? I tried to put out all printheads + inks and start again, but nothing happened.
You should start a new thread. Make sure the printer is disconnected from the computer/network before turning it on, see if it initializes. If it does you need to clear whatever print jobs are trying to be sent from the computer.
And consumables continue to work once out of warranty.
