    HP solenoid sticking; what material do you use to replace

    From feeding jams to transfer belt errors, this solenoid failure has generated a bit of service calls for techs.

    I've seen all kinds of stuff out there, felt pads, electrical tape, mylars... etc.

    I tried electrical tape but seems you need the right amount of layers, if too thin the plates will magnetically stick, if too thick the pawl will not disengage from the clutch. So its kind of a hit and miss.

    What do you use to replace that sticky disintegrating noise dampening sponge?


    I might try this weatherstripping tape 1/16" thick:

          Often the sound dampening pad isn't part of solenoid itself. My method is to apply 2-3 layers of electrical tape, works everytime for me.
          Besides sometimes to trace new solenoid wiring to the opposite side of printer           through the narrow twisted path is quite a big job.

              In this situation I usually cut down those extra foreign language control panel stickers. They are self-adhesive, easy to cut, ~0.75mm thick, and come in whatever language you'd like. They never get sticky on the lever side, and there's no risk of ever running out.

              On the Toshiba duplex units I've been over-wrapping the existing damper with a thin layer of self-adhesive mylar. Again, it never gets sticky on the gate side, and there's no risk of ever running out.

              1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
              2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
              3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
              4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
              5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

                  Yes, they are inexpensive, I agree, and that's a great reason to return for a second trip with a follow up solenoid, and I may actually do that at times. But most of the time its one of those items I'd like to keep in my bag of tricks (miscellaneous box of screws and things) to repair "on the spot" without having to return.

                      With a little practice, MacGuyvers like this are as good or better than ordering parts. On a first trip, if the MacGuyver does not cost too much time ... yes I'll try it. If it holds until the parts arrive, it qualifies as a good short term fix. Later I might use that repaired part until the replacement part arrives. If it still proves successful, I'll consider it a complete solution. =^..^=

                          We have a large sheet of thin cork pad...like what they used to use ... works a treat and did not cost much from the local craft store.

                          I have all my techs carry a good amount of it - its also used a lot in our folder/inserters as prefeed pads - I don't bother with any 3M tape, just a wipe of your favorite Cyanoacrylate gel and have never had to re-replace the cork other than the folder/inserter but they are used in a different manner and are expected to get damaged (user error mostly).
