Designjet 500. x over ink ctg but no error

I've got a dj500 with a picture of an x blinking on the right side of the printer in the control panel but it's not giving me an error. i've seen a document talking about the blinking on the power button but the light on the power button blinks nonstop at a steady slow pace. this was supposed to indicate a firmware problem. i'm unable to get my laptop to see the printer. i've taaken out all supplies and restarted but still get the same results. this machine has no formatter.

    any thoughts?

From the user's guide, "Flashing cross (X); the wrong cartridge is installed, and must be replaced before any further printing can be done." Usually means you have a defective ink cartridge.

Does it do it with the other cartridges removed? If not but after inserting another cartridge, that same one starts flashing, then the other ink cartridge is bad and causing the first to appear faulty.

Sorry, I should have read your post more thoroughly. When you say there's a flashing X.. is it in one of the 4 color positions? These printers don't like to do much without working ink cartridges installed. I just had one a customer brought me and the cyan cartridge was faulty (for whatever reason) and it refused to do anything else until a working cartridge was installed.

This is with ALL supplies removed. No ink, no printheads, no paper

I'll get the customer to install all new ink and see what happens.

Oh now I understand! Unfortunately I don't know what that display means but I'll see what I can find out. Are there any cards installed? Network? HP/GL2? I'd remove any and see if that changes anything but I bet you already have.

I'm thinking power supply because the power supply fan does not even come on. It only gets 2 or 3 seconds into the power up before this appears.

I'm still waiting on an answer from my friend at HP, but I happened to come across this. It could be an ISS issue. Make sure it's plugged in correctly.

That makes sense, but I can't get over the fact that the power supply fan never turns on.

Are you talking about the little fan on top of the EMOD? Or the actual fan inside the power supply? The one on top only comes on when the printer prints, and even that seems random. I'm not sure the one in the power supply runs either unless it reaches a specific temperature. I've never really looked.

I'm sorry but I couldn't get any more information. I did however find a reference to a 'special X mode', entered by holding down the cancel button and inserting the power cord, which apparently lets you send a firmware update.

I thought the display you're getting indicated a botched firmware update but I don't know if these two 'x modes' are related.

Hopefully the cancel button isn't just stuck?

Thanks, I'll see where I can get. I have access to a used ISS I can take with me, so I'll try this first and then put in the ISS and see if that solves it.

I noticed that if I hold down on the cancel button and plug it in, the icon with the X immediately comes up. If I plug it in without holding the cancel button, I first see the HP invent logo for a couple of seconds, and then the X icon comes up.

If I try to upload firmware while it is in the state, my computer cannot see it.
