I already have a new trailing cable though about replacing it as well. Do you think a bad trailing cable could be the culprit all along?

I'd get a trailing cable at the same time. There's a fair chance you won't be able to reuse the old one.
No, I've only seen a handful of bad carriages over the years.

You know I am surprised that I don't get some error code for the carriage pcb. Talked to Tim at LPS computer and he said it was rare for this board to fail. Guess their is a first time for everything. Ordered a new carriage assembly from them. Have you seen many of these boards fail?

I usually pull about 5ml of ink out when priming the tubes.

Kiran;
I have removed the board from the carriage unit. While removing the ink supply tube I noticed there is still air in the tube. I used the LPS tool to remove what I thought was all the air, but I evidently have more. Do I need to pull some additional ink until the tube is solid ink? I have no idea as to how so much air got in the tubes. Unless when I replaced the ISS unit air entered the lines.

I found a carriage board on Ebay, that will be easier to change rather than replacing the complete carriage assembly. I have a spare electronic module assy but I suspect something has gone wrong with that carriage board. I also ordered another printhead tonight. I don't think it is that but you never know.

I doubt it's the trailing cable. If that was an issue you'd get 11:11 errors. It may be the carriage, or the EMOD. Removal of the carriage and trailing cable are covered in the service manual.
If you replace the trailing cable, be sure to re-use the plastic stiffener from the old cable, if one exists.

I can't check the firmware won't let me get information. Removed all the printheads except the black and I still get the X on it. How do I go about getting to the cables that go to the carriage?Leave a comment:

I thought you updated the firmware already? Yes, I would presume the printer must be ready to accept the firmware update.
If the printer rejects multiple printheads, then I would suspect there is something wrong with the carriage or the contacts the printhead mates to. You could have another bad printhead that is making the black not work. Try reseating them all and make sure the contacts are clean.
If the firmware isn't on 5.01 then you need to resolve that first. I think you can view the firmware version through the front panel... somewhere.
Kiran
PS - Put the black in by itself and see if you get the X or not. If not, then it's likely another printhead causing a problem.
Ok I removed the other printheads and it still shows a x on the black head. How do I get to the cables that plug into the printhead carriage? Yes I did the firmware upgrade before I started this nightmare.

Well, I just replaced the bad printhead. It still has the X showing for the black printhead. Where else could be the problem?Leave a comment:

I would order all the inks and printheads you expect to ever need. HP is discontinuing them in November. The black ink cartridge was discontinued last November.

I would just replace it. Always rule out the consumable first.
Also make sure the firmware is up to date. There were issues with the #10 printheads and the dates.
