    Grey background on LJ 3800

    Hello everyone,

a customer of ours has a LaserJet 3800 and it prints a grey background on every page. My boss, who was on site, told me the black cartridge wasnt completely snapped into place so I thought it might have leaked and told the customer to keep printing some hundred pages and it should fix itseld. It didnt. My boss also did a recalibration, just to be sure, but we seem to be stuck.

HP support doesnt help (as if it ever would). Got any ideas what I could do? Scans -> HP_LJ_3800_Errors.pdf.

    verify cartridge locks aren't broken
    reseat Formatter into dc controller
    try HVPS
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

Try the easy stuff first. Swap in a different black cartridge. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I was actually fearing that it might be the HVPS. My boss (not very experienced with printers) said he already inserted a different black cartridge. I assumed that the grey pages were the result of toner residue in the machine which would clean itself off in time. Complicating things is the fact that the customer isnt really "ours". Seems like I will have to go to said customer and run a torough diagnosis and see what comes of it. I thought somebody might have experienced the same issue before and would have a quick remedy. Thanks

Edit: Actually, checking the locks sounds like a good idea and the next best thing. I dont think he checked that.

If the cartridge locks are bad the cartridge doesn't make good contact with the HVPS contacts. Remove the toner cartridges with the transfer belt open, slowly raise the belt while watching the right side of the cartridge slots. Plastic hooks should come down. Those are the locks. You will be able to see if they are broken. About 75% of the time that's your problem. You need to replace all 4 locks even if only one is broken. This is a pretty daunting repair so if you're not sure about it call a qualified tech to replace them as it requires main rear drive timing and alignment.

I just looked at your attachment. Maybe it's just the calibration of the scanner, but that background looks to be cyan to me. You might try shifting your focus in that direction. =^..^=

Actually, the background is, in fact, grey. The scanner which he used is quite bad, it's a brother MFP and even tho I worked with them I never thought much of their performance.

I had a look at the physical prints since my boss brought them in this morning and it seems that said background is only present on the single color CMY prints, the BK test page actually has no such background. So yeah, talk about a bad scanner

Thanks for the directions prntrfxr. I will have a look and probably call support to do the actual repair if it turns out to be needed. I usually do the networking and connectivity work and not THAT much of the mechanical stuff

Seems like we will never know what has been wrong. The customer was fed up and simply replaced it. Oh well. Thanks for your help. Reputation has been added
