    4050 Spring Clutch

All right. I have the tray 1 pickup assembly out of this printer. There is a spring clutch on the end of the feed pulley shaft. I need to lube this clutch. In order to take it apart you have to compress 4 little plastic tabs simultaneously. What is the secret to doing this? I've been dicking around with it for about 15 minutes now and I'm about ready to scream.

You find a piece of tubing the the inner diameter is just slightly larger than the bore of the clutch. Just hold the clutch while pressing all the tabs simultaneously with the tubing. Easy as pie.

If this is an electromagnetic clutch without a clutch spring, you don't want any lubrication, just clean it. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

There is actually a separation in the collar (for lack of a better name for it) that sits behind the gear. If you turn it you will see a notch large enough for a small blade screwdriver. While holding the 4 tabs insert a small blade screwdriver and turn separating one end from the other. Hope this helps. I rebuild about 50 of these a month.

As a side point about these units. There are 3 different varieties (that I've noticed) of these clutches. The older version (apparently the one you have) is difficult to take apart and put together. Putting it together will give you just as many fits. I sometimes replace it with a different type because it takes too long to take apart. I can do that because I have many of them, but in your situation you will have to take the time.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Coke in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!".

The tube idea was a good one, worked like a charm. It is a spring clutch and it's dry as a bone. No wonder it was making a racket. Thanks for the assist, you two.
