It has been awhile since I worked on that box Thank God, but I would suspect the HD. I dont think the ADf will work without it. and it could be flaking out. You could try and reformat then load firmware but all that is a pain in the butt. The formatter should just plug n play.

I have replaced the adf, same prob.
I was going to replace the formatter any tips on this?

Is your customer willing to pay 2 hours labor minimum to troubleshoot that machine? If not, carry to nearest dumpster and throw it in.

no feed motors at print machine initializes but adf doesnt do its thing then gives error code. any suggestions?
