Now will not print one piece of paper from tray 1. The paper jams as it starts to exit from the fuser.Changed the loop adjustment,new firmware.Jam code now 99-01 controller jam.Tray 2 and bypass still working.No other messages about paper size.at a loss.

What is total counter ?

If 300k + the registration bushings would be suspect.

Was tray 1 feed unit replaced from another model?
The 423 has an extra sensor that the slower models don't and can give the symptom you describe.

9901 can also be mis-sized paper. Make sure paper size and orientation is correct for tray 1

Yeah thats a symptom too, it jams and says blah blah paper size in the tray.
The extra sensor in the 423 is for paper length and without it the paper is seen as a different size and asks to load paper size correctly.

Have seen more than a few 363 and 423 do this because the drive motor slowed down, try trading the two on the back around.

replace the drive motor.

check the registration rollers for tightness, should roll with very little resistance.
