M2640idw Drum going out too soon.

    Hello Folks,

So we have particular this customer with a M2640idw printer that only has 81K count and we have already replaced 3 drum since we installed this printer at their office in mid 2020. Today I had to replaced the 3rd drum after trying to "Drum Refresh" it and wouldn't make the prints any better at all. I also noticed the fuser was a little hotter than usual and it was causing a slight burning plastic smell coming from the rear area. However, It works fine other than the prints quality issues due to the bad drum. I suspect it is some kind of voltages issues that may be supplying more voltage than it should to the drum therefore damaging the drum way too soon?? Same for the fuser may be receiving more voltages therefore heating up more than it should?? Or maybe there isn't such thing as voltage overloading these 2 components?? I do not work on little printers too much so I can't seem to figure why the drum are going out too soon. Can someone please point me in the right direction on where/what to look for?..............Thanks in advances!!!!

    Thanks in advance!!

Firstly if the fuser is getting unexpectedly too hot it would throw an error & shut down. This is a safety feature & all copiers do this.

The drums on these unit do have a pretty short life & if you are not using genuine Kyocera toner this will be even less.

Copier Tech already nailed it. Are you using OEM toners? (I already know the answer) Also, try putting the copier in quite mode and make sure the copier's power save modes are at factory default intervals (refer to service manual) to help extend fuser life. If you are in doubt about voltages have you checked the wall A/C voltage, first?

Compatible toner definitely shortens the drum life immensely.

I've gotten away with vacuuming out the drum unit waste and cleaning thoroughly without having to replace.

But, that doesn't work when the drum is physically damaged.

Have you checked the dv unit?

You can also vacuum that out entirely and dv refresh.

Sure you can vacuum out the developing unit, but replace it with OEM toner only, otherwise your just wasting your time.

Yeah that's for sure. But, only when they are willing to provide OEM toner for certain clients. Than that's the only option I have.

            OEM toner is supreme though.

Third party toner will eat the living hell out of these drums. It also corrupts the dv material giving grainy and streaking prints that will not fuse properly. Using OEM supplies, these boxes are pretty solid for the most part.

Thanks for the info. This printer uses cheap toner. I had no idea that the cheap toner can shorten the life of the drum.

yea I have been noticing this problems lately at our customers base. My bosses are pennywise and dollar stupid for supplying the customer with 3rd party toners.

No we are using cheap 3rd party toners on 90% of the machines out here. I have not checked the wall's A/C voltages yet. I just went ahead and replaced the drum with another used drum my boss gave me and it solved the issues but I'm sure we'll be back sooner than later for same problem Lol...

Are you able to somehow dissemble the drum unit on this little printers and vacuum out the waste toner out of it??

They are consumable units so there are not supposed to be taken apart but if there is a will there is a way. Personal I would not do that the time it would take to try and prevent the toner in there from cheap toner is not worth it IMO. Kyocera has a great warranty program just get your money back if they go out

On this model there should be a rectangular tab that you can pop out where the waste toner goes and you can just vacuum that out.

But, I only do this due to lack of OEM toner being ordered for some clients.

If I know they will not order OEM toner for a client I will vacuum both DV and drum unit out instead of replacing with new ones.
