Trump's actions show he's still only out for himself
        Analysis by Maeve Reston, CNN
Updated 10:47 AM EST, Sun December 20, 2020

(CNN)In the six weeks since President-elect Joe Biden won the White House, President Donald Trump has proved again and again that he has little concern for anyone other than himself, scheming and spreading falsehoods as he seeks to overturn the election while seeming unmoved by the grim climb in coronavirus cases that has led to more than 316,000 deaths in the United States while countless Americans struggle to keep food on the table.

Just when it seemed like the President couldn't sink any lower in his quest to subvert the November election results, his mere entertainment of invoking martial law to negate Biden's victory underscores how laser-focused he still is on his own interests at a time when the nation is mired in crisis.

The idea came up during an extraordinary Oval Office meeting Friday between Trump, members of his team and two of his most discredited outside advisers -- lawyer Sidney Powell, a fount of baseless voter fraud theories, and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, whom Trump recently pardoned and who first floated the martial law idea earlier last week. The impromptu gathering devolved into a shouting match between his advisers -- some of whom were forcefully resisting Powell and Flynn's outrageous suggestions -- but it nevertheless showed how Trump continues to surround himself with sycophants, no matter how crazy their theories are as long as they will benefit him.

Re: Just how Crazy is Donald Trump!

Despite Record Turnout, 80 Million Americans Didn't Vote. Here's Why

More Americans voted in 2020 than in any other presidential election in 120 years.

About 67% of eligible voters cast ballots this year, but that still means a third did not.

That amounts to about 80 million people who stayed home.

To better understand what motivates these nonvoters, NPR and the Medill School of Journalism commissioned Ipsos to conduct a survey of U.S. adults who didn't vote this year. The Medill school's graduate students did deep dives into various aspects of the survey here.

Nonvoters' reasons for not voting include:

              • not being registered to vote (29%)
              • not being interested in politics (23%)
              • not liking the candidates (20%)
              • a feeling their vote wouldn't have made a difference (16%)
              • being undecided on whom to vote for (10%)

They are disengaged, disaffected and don't believe politics can make a difference in their lives. They are also more likely to be Latino, younger, make less money and have lower levels of education than voters.

              A lack of engagement overall

Difficulty voting doesn't appear to be a major reason why they don't vote. Three-quarters said they think it's at least somewhat easy to vote.

It's more that these voters feel a sense of alienation and apathy. They are generally detached from the news and pessimistic about politics, the survey found.

Politics is simply not the way to make change, they said. Two-thirds of nonvoters agree, for example, that voting has little to do with the way that real decisions are made in this country; they are 21 points more likely to say so than people who voted.

A majority also said they believe it makes no difference who is elected president and that things will go on just as they did before. Nonvoters were 29 points more likely to say that than people who voted.

These 80 million Americans are also less engaged in their communities and have less confidence even in their local governments. They're also less likely to volunteer or to be civically engaged — doing things like sending letters to the news media and elected officials or participating in marches, protests and demonstrations.

              Nonvoters are also more likely than voters to say that traditional parties and politicians don't care about people like me;

              - the mainstream media is more interested in making money than telling the truth

              - the American economy is rigged to advantage the rich and powerful

              - success in life is pretty much determined by forces outside our control

              - and to feel that most issues discussed in Washington don't affect them personally.

The latest: Targets of his outrage include Vice President Pence, chief of staff Mark Meadows, White House counsel Pat Cipollone, Secretary of State Pompeo and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Why it matters: Trump thinks everyone around him is weak, stupid or disloyal — and increasingly seeks comfort only in people who egg him on to overturn the election results. We cannot stress enough how unnerved Trump officials are by the conversations unfolding inside the White House.

Top officials are trying to stay away from the West Wing right now.

Trump is lashing out, and everyone is in the blast zone: At this point, if you're not in the “use the Department of Homeland Security or the military to impound voting machines” camp, the president considers you weak and beneath contempt.
Trump is fed up with Cipollone, his counsel. Some supporters of Cipollone are worried that Trump is on the brink of removing him and replacing him with a fringe loyalist.
A source who spoke to Trump said the president was complaining about Pence and brought up a Lincoln Project ad that claims that Pence is "backing away" from Trump. This ad has clearly got inside Trump’s head, the source said.

Trump views Pence as not fighting hard enough for him — the same complaint he uses against virtually everybody who works for him and has been loyal to him.
Pence’s role on Jan. 6 has begun to loom large in Trump’s mind, according to people who’ve discussed the matter with him.

Trump would view Pence performing his constitutional duty — and validating the election result — as the ultimate betrayal.
A new fixation: Trump has even been asking advisers whether they can get state legislatures to rescind their electoral votes. When he’s told no, he lashes out even more, said a source who discussed the matter with the president.

And in an Oval meeting Monday night, Trump spoke with House Republicans about voting to overturn the result on Jan. 6 — a desperate vote that even Trump has privately acknowledged he's bound to lose.

... the more bad news Trump creates, the more he increases the chances that the Democrats can flip two crucial Senate seats in Georgia. With early voting way up in Georgia plus the general unlikeability of the two current, very rich white Republican Senators plus the fact that 33% of the voters being people of colour plus the pubic dislike of most Republican Senators things look promising for President elect Joe Biden.

Two of Trump's most famous and vocal TV supporters, Lou Dobbs and Maria Bartiromo had to personally issue on air retractions of their false and fact free claims .

Expect more public retractions soon from extreme right wing broadcasters like OAN, Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin for partaking in a massive voter disinformation campaign to support Trump's failed bid at re-election.

All parties involved in spreading this disinformation are likely to face large lawsuits which they will either fight in court and likely lose or quietly settle out of court.

Trump announces wave of pardons, including Papadopoulos and former lawmakers Hunter and Collins

President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a wave of lame duck pardons, including two for men who pleaded guilty in Robert Mueller's investigation, as well as ones for Republican allies who once served in Congress and military contractors involved in a deadly shooting of Iraqi civilians.

The pardons of former campaign aide George Papadopoulos, former US congressmen Duncan Hunter and Chris Collins, and the four Blackwater guards involved in the Iraq massacre kick off what is expected to be a flurry of pardons and commutations in the coming weeks as Trump concludes his term.

Also included in the batch announced on Tuesday are Alex van der Zwaan, the Dutch lawyer who was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to lying to Mueller investigators; two Border Patrol agents convicted in 2006 of shooting and wounding an unarmed undocumented immigrant and then covering it up; and several people convicted of non-violent drug crimes serving lengthy sentences.

Trump throws Covid relief bill in doubt by asking Congress to amend it

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he is asking for changes to the coronavirus relief bill passed by Congress, leaving the future of the $900 billion stimulus in question.

"I'm asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2000 or $4000 per couple," Trump said in a video released on Twitter. "I'm also asking Congress to immediately get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items in this legislation or to send me a suitable bill."

The extraordinary message came after he largely left negotiations over the measure to lawmakers and his Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Trump did not explicitly threaten to veto the bill, but said he was dissatisfied with its final state.

The President has in the past said he would sign the bill, and earlier Tuesday the White House publicly defended the bill. But many of his allies have spoken out against the agreement passed.

... Trump is doing what he does best... create turmoil and uncertainty for millions of US citizens and businesses. Until Trump signs the Senate approved COVID-19 bill, no financial aid will flow.

... as Trump will become a citizen in 30 days, he presented no plan on how to pay for this whopping unplanned spending!

... of course, the list of potential lawsuits will be so long from so many aggrieved parties, it could takes years to reach a court room.

Televangelist Pat Robertson, a prominent conservative backer of Donald Trump, said Monday that the President is living in an "alternate reality" and should "move on" from his 2020 election loss.

"With all his talent, and the ability to raise money and draw large crowds, the President still lives in an alternate reality," Robertson said Monday on "The 700 Club." "He really does. People say, 'Well he lies about this, that and the other.' But he isn't lying. To him, that's the truth."

Televangelist Pat Robertson says Trump lives in an 'alternate reality' and should move on from election loss - CNNPolitics

Robertson -- who prayed for Trump's win in 2020 and once suggested that whoever is "revolting" against Trump is "revolting against what God's plan is for America" -- joins a growing list of prominent conservatives who are telling Trump it's time to accept his clear election loss. In particular, Robertson is a uniquely influential figure among evangelicals, a critical part of the President's base.

Trump has "done a marvelous job for the economy," Robertson said Monday, but argued that he is "very erratic."

"He's fired people, he's fought people and he's insulted people, and he keeps going down the line. So it's a mixed bag," Robertson said of the President. "And I think it would be well to say, 'You've had your day and it's time to move on.'"
He also cast doubt on Trump's flailing efforts to overturn the election results.

... if Trump has lost the evangelists, he has lost a large number of supporters.
