The US is in a self inflicted crisis right now because the what is best for the country is less important than what is best for the politicians trying to gain an advantage and hold onto power. Both parties are to blame but much more so on Trump and the Republican leadership.

I actually thought Trump was showing compassion when he suggested $2000 instead of $600 for people. It now appears he was simply trying to kill the stimulus bill. It's too bad people have to suffer just because some buffoon in the White House can't accept that he lost.

House Republicans rejected an effort by House Democrats on Thursday to pass a bill to provide $2,000 stimulus checks - up from the $600 approved in a sweeping coronavirus relief and omnibus spending package earlier in the week.

Democrats offered the bill after President Trump raised objections to the $2.3 trillion COVID-19 relief and omnibus spending package approved by Congress on Monday.

Trump explicitly complained that the $600 direct payments to Americans included in the bill were too small, calling for the checks to be $2,000.

Democrats seized on the president's words to try to put Republicans in a difficult spot, arguing they also preferred the higher payments.



House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) offered the measure to boost the check size to $2,000 during the Christmas Eve session of the House by unanimous consent.

A number of Republicans in Congress oppose direct payments of $2,000, saying they're concerned about the impact on the deficit.

What is often missed is that although the $600.00 cheques were a one time payment to individuals who earn less than $75,000.00 per year, a family of four would receive 4x $600.00 = $2,400.00 plus each week for 13 weeks, a $300.00 assistance cheque.

Trump really should have left this alone, signed the Stimulus deal and left forever to play golf.

Any time a 5,500 page Omnibus bill is tried to pass, of course, everybody can find some way to pick it apart.

What is troublesome are all of the people who thought they were going to get a $600.00 stimulus cheque next week might have gone out and spent the money on Xmas gifts and are now deeper in debt than before.

Accepting a gov't stimulus cheque is a form of socialism by any other name. Those forum members and Trump supporters who fear the USA is turning socialist , should not cash their cheques .... you know they will cash the cheques ASAP!

It may be popular among Republicans and far right media to claim socialism is evil until it costs them money.
