Of the 50-plus defendants who have been sentenced for their role in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, fewer than half were sent to jail for their crimes. Most received an assortment of lesser penalties, including brief terms of house arrest, a couple years of probation, four-figure fines or court-ordered community service, according to a CNN analysis.

The milestone of 50 sentencings was hit on Friday, a busy day in court, with six hearings on the schedule. Four defendants got probation Friday, including a pair of veterans from Wisconsin, while one man who stole a beer from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office got 20 days in jail.

As federal prosecutors have brought cases against nearly 700 rioters, a heated debate has emerged over what justice should look like for such an unprecedented assault on democracy. This debate has raged on social media and in the halls of Congress. It has also played out among the two dozen judges handling the cases at the federal courthouse in Washington, DC.

After 50 sentencings, a split has developed on the bench: One group of judges has handed down stiffer punishments to rioters, including time behind bars. While a more skeptical group of judges have rebuffed the Justice Department and instead imposed fines and probation, which means the rioters will avoid jail but stay under government supervision for years to come.

This dynamic won't last forever -- this initial wave of guilty pleas and sentencings will eventually be followed up by dozens of more serious felony cases with longer prison terms. But for now, the dizzying array of outcomes has caused some headaches. Judges are questioning the department's approach to January 6, and politicians from both sides have fanned the flames.

"It doesn't look great that we're taking a bunch of people who stormed the United States Capitol and letting them go home. Not a lot of people are spending a lot of time in jail," said a Justice Department prosecutor with knowledge of the January 6 investigation said on the condition of anonymity. "But jail isn't always the best outcome. A lot of them are getting significant terms of supervised release and probation, so they've got to keep their nose clean."

Former President Donald Trump’s job approval was slightly higher than President Joe Biden’s at the same point in his presidency, according to the average of ratings charted by RealClearPolitics (RCP).
The RCP average for Trump shows on February 3 of his second year in office that he had a slightly better approval rating than Biden has now.
For the first time ever, Trump’s historical average job approval is above Biden’s by .3 percent. On this date in 2018, 41.9 percent approved of Trump and 54.2 percent disapproved:

... in your brain you can whitewash this all you want, but clearly the Jan 6th riot was anything but peaceful. It was a violent protest incited by the ex President, the riot was conducted by rabid Trump supporters, people died and there was much destruction of property.

None of the people who attended the Jan 6th attack were heroes. All of the rioters were dupes attempting to overthrow the democratic process by intimidation and force.

You can also try and divert the topic by making some false equivalencies to the public reaction to the summer 2021 George Floyd riots.

The Jan 6th committee is not going away and will present it's conclusions based on facts & evidence when it is ready.

15 boxes of White House records have been recovered at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort


The National Archives and Records Administration NARA said it has retrieved 15 boxes of White House records and other items that were stored at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago property instead of at the National Archives.

As first reported by The Washington Post, the documents retrieved last month from the Florida property contained important records of communication along with Trump's self-described "love letters" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as well as a letter addressed to Trump from his predecessor, former President Barack Obama.

According to the newspaper, keeping the boxes of records at Mar-a-Lago violated the Presidential Records Act — which requires that the government keep all forms of documents and communications related to a president's or vice president's official duties.

As required by the act, the records discovered at Mar-a-Lago should have been transferred to NARA from the White House at the end of the Trump administration in January 2021.
"The Presidential Records Act mandates that all Presidential records must be properly preserved by each Administration so that a complete set of Presidential records is transferred to the National Archives at the end of the Administration," said David Ferriero, archivist of the United States.

In a statement released by the National Archives Public and Media Communications, the agency said that it arranged for the transport of 15 boxes containing the presidential records from Trump's Florida property last month "following discussions with President Trump's representatives in 2021."

Representatives for Trump informed NARA they are continuing to "search for additional Presidential records that belong to the National Archives," according to the National Archives.

Trump advisers told the Post that they deny "any nefarious intent" and said the 15 boxes contained "mementos, gifts, letters from world leaders and other correspondence."
News of the boxes discovered at Trump's Florida residence comes a week after the Archives turned over damaged White House documents from his administration to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.

Hundreds of pages of documents were either taped back together or arrived at the Archives "still in pieces," the Post reported.

"The only way that a president can really be held accountable long term is to preserve a record about who said what, who did what, what policies were encouraged or adopted, and that is such an important part of the long-term scope of accountability — beyond just elections and campaigns," presidential historian Lindsay Chervinsky told the Post.
