A few years ago, we had a couple of machines in one of those peep joints, you had to walk thru the hall where these guys were watching porn in their little booths(to get to office where machines were) the floors were awful, shoes were slipping on wet floor, as you were walking thru, just gross, and the noises you would hear.... well.. you can imagine, and the smell... just plain nasty. Those places were eventually torn down. Good riddance.

Fortunately, the one we had was a well known one that was more of an actual "Gentleman's Club".

6: Lawyers, especially the small office types, biggest complainers, usually not as bright as the paper their using.
7: Cops, once had to work on units for a police force, can't believe how some of them became detectives.

Once had to put locks on a copier for a university library, toner and paper trays, anything that a normal customer would be able to open as the prior machine got urine damage from tomorrows' leaders.

Oh boy about the lawyers. Worst problem I had with them was an office where we delivered a nice new Copystar 2530. Well got it in and hooked up to the small network and everything there was fine. What the big problem turned out to be was one partner wanted the energy save feature turned off. Because he did not have the time to waste waiting the fifteen seconds it took to come out of energy save mode, not auto shutoff, just energy save. So as per his instructions I did set the machine to not go into energy save/sleep mode. Did have to explain that I could not turn off the auto shut-off because of energy compliance rules made that mandatory to leave set to turn off after not being used for two hours. Three days later get another call. The second partner calls and wants the energy save feature turned back on. Get there and try to explain the other partner insisted it be turned off. No go the second partner explains he does not want a machine running all day when no one is using it. So I set the sleep mode after ten minutes of no use. And yes you guessed it the first partner called back two days later and insisted it be turned back off. The fifteen seconds warm up from sleep mode was too wasteful of his time when he needed to make copies or scan to e-mail. That went back and forth another two times before i set it up and had my boss tell them no more calls for energy save set-up.
And that was not the only problem there. We provided one extra toner with the machine. With a nice little sticker on the toner box to call for replacement when you install. Yeap they ignored that and ran out of toner and needed it "IMMEDIATELY" Got real upset when we told them it would be delivered tomorrow morning by 9:30. Fun part if I remember correctly is that machine had a little warning on the screen: toner low order replacement, at about fifteen percent level left. Good for about 1500 pages.
Lots of other really stupid operator errors too. Stapled documents stuck in doc feeder, paper tray guides not set to edges of paper. Even had one call because it would not automatically sense double sides copies in the doc feeder. We did not offer them a service contract after the warranty expired. Once they started paying for the stupid calls like that they got real smart and read the operators manual and then their secretary quit and they hired someone that would make a dumb blonde stereotype look like a genius.


Well I decided this was a problem best solved by the owner of where I worked. Boss did not like having to deal with these two idiots so when the warranty period ran out we did not offer a service contract.

I remember years back we had a lawyer buy a Canon NP155, with the Canon stand. He had his buddy cut out a small section of the counter to squeeze the machine into.

While it may have looked "nice", it was literally impossible to move it out far enough to open it up without about a 15 minute process of rearranging to furniture to allow enough space.

He went through the roof when we asked him we needed to do that. He screamed "The salesman told me that was all the space you needed, and that's all you're getting. It's your problem to figure it out!".

Not sure what happened after I walked out and told my service manager, but it ultimately ended up that he returned the machine. What a dork!

We have multiple machine in a number of schools. Usually no more problems than any other type of customers. Prison on the other hand.

We also have 5 production machines in school locations. The school districts have found that it is more cost effective to do all state required classroom hand outs in house and hire an individual to do so.

Hey slim, I think it is different if you have production machines with " trained key operators" in schools. What most here are talking about is a copier that all teachers have access to make a few copies here and there.

Hey slim, I think it is different if you have production machines with " trained key operators" in schools. What most here are talking about is a copier that all teachers have access to make a few copies here and there.

A few more to add to top 10 list:

Auto repair shops & restaurants, outside of machines always extremely dirty with grease, etc.

Didn't have too many in restaurants. But there were one or two that come to mind. Like the one that put the copier in the kitchen. And just could not understand why they could not get good copies. Just because the machine was on a "desk" next to the steam kettles. The ones used to cook fifty gallons of soup at a time steam kettles. Or maybe that Cs 1435 put in a supply cabinet/office three steps away from a steam dish washer. Of course trying to explain that steam produced water vapor which was absorbed by the paper was like talking to the wall.

And then we've all had something like this toonice_try_but_you_are_doing_it_wrong_640_39.jpg
