I haven't kept track of Dems vs Reps, but I would like to know where your 80% number came from.
If I had to guess, the ratio would be closer to 60 to 40% conservative; perhaps, someone can start a poll with "extreme left, left, moderate, right, extreme right".

Dems vs Republicans does not matter to this thread.

In 40 minutes, if Trump delivers his threat as promised the USA becomes the world #1 in four things.

1). The most trade Protectionist country in the world!
2). The largest jailer in the world!
3). The largest debtor nation in the world (mostly to China)!
4). The most dangerous country in the world if you go to school (gun violence)!

... and I do think that President Trump is right to apply tariffs to all Chinese trade.

... but is it right to charge a single mother on income assistance 25% more to buy a lowest cost baby stroller made in China?

... trade negotiations will continue one more day into Friday without tariff increases at 12:01 AM.

The Chinese seriously miscalculated President Trump's resolve on this one issue to get his way.

If the Chinese do not come to the negotiating table with verifiable concessions, President Trump is more than OK with increasing tariffs to 25%.

            This is called "hardball" politics.

This is what I did to the "few" radical Dems on this forum. Great never having to read the rhetoric they spew. Just not worth my time going back and forth with them. Really refreshing to see at least 80% of members on this forum are conservative. Probably most here are small Indy's like myself and business is great! So why would we change anything?

On the topic of the word "Conservative" in American politics, we have a Conservative party in Canada. It ruled for the last decade. The American definition of Conservative politics is so far to the right of center, I would consider it extreme. Definitely bad on the environment, women's rights and even financial policy.

The environment is now the #1 issue for millenials when voting according to recent polling data.

The 25% tariff took effect at midnight applying to all goods shipped after May 10th from China.

China has promised retaliation. Their most potent weapon is to stop buying US Treasury notes (the biggest buyer) and begin to sell US currency (the largest holder). The US is desperate to sell more and more Treasury notes.

                  Talks continue into Friday.

"....Given shipping times, goods sent from China today will take two weeks or so to reach the U.S., so if a trade deal is stuck in that time frame, the pain of the 25% tariffs will never be felt," he added.

President Trump threatens the possibility that a further $325B worth of remaining trade with China could be subject to potential 25% tariffs.

Presently, the 25% tariffs apply to $200B worth of product that China imports into the USA.

Many Western companies with manufacturing facilities in China are now rapidly diversifying into SouthEast Asia. This includes countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Taiwan.

With a US Presidential election approx 18 months away and the popularity amongst Americans to get tough on China plus China's strong desire to become the worlds #1 economic superpower, it seems unlikely that trade tensions will cool in the next two years and that tariffs will be present for many months.

President Trump's tariffs are essentially a new tax on US corporations and citizens should they continue to elect to buy product made in China.

The most likely outcome is that the USA and China will gradually decouple their economies from each other resulting in a slowing of global growth.

While much is said about the trade war from a Western media point of view, little is written about the Chinese point of view.

Last Sunday when President Trump decided to escalate the tariffs from 10% to 25% on $200B worth of imported Chinese goods, he probably did not know that that day was the 100th anniversary of the May 4th Movement in China which celebrated a revolt against the imperialist terms that the West imposed on China in the post World War 1 Treaty of Versailles.

To escalate trade tariffs on that day automatically made trade talks more inflammatory akin to China raising tariffs against the USA on Independence Day July 4th.

It'''s time for markets to end their illusions about US-China trade deal

The trade talks have become just one of many events of a new era of geopolitical and systemic competition that will define our times.

What appears to be most unacceptable to the trade talks is the US demand that China must change its national laws to abide by the deal's terms.

What do you think would happen if China demanded that the USA change its national laws to abide by the deal's terms?

For a leader like Chinese President Xi - who has staked his reputation on ending what his supporters see as China's "century of humiliation" at the hand of foreign powers, the on again and off again trade talks have become about so much more than trade.

China will continue to engage the USA in trade talks but not much is likely to happen until after the next USA Presidential election when China expects a more agreeable President will be elected.

It is estimated that if the trade war escalates the average US consumer will pay in excess of $800.00 in tariff taxes per year to the US gov't.

                          What a BUNCH of BS

US consumers will PAY 100% of the tariffs. Past on in Higher Prices, Not only copier but A/C products and many other's. ZERO company's returning to US to build plants.

President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow said that American consumers would bear a burden from the escalating trade war with China, contradicting the President.

TRUMPO's Twitter Their is no reason for the U.S. Consumer to pay the Tariffs, which take effect on China today. This has been proven recently when only 4 points were paid by the U.S., 21 points by China because China subsidizes product to such a large degree. Also, the Tariffs can be.......completely avoided if you by from a non-Tariffed Country, or you buy the product inside the USA (the best idea). That’s Zero Tariffs. Many Tariffed companies will be leaving China for Vietnam and other such countries in Asia. That’s why China wants to make a deal so badly!...

President Trump is correct in stating that if the US consumer wants to avoid paying tariffs simply purchase goods made in the USA or manufactured in non tariffs countries.

While this may be good advice on a wide range of goods, this thread is focussed on the copier/ printer industry.

As A3 copiers remain the "meat and potatoes" of the copier industry and almost all A3 copiers are manufactured in China, this may be hard to do.

There is no evidence yet of A3 copier manufacturers raising their prices in response to the tariffs but I would suspect an additional 15% tariff tax on top of the current 10% tariff tax may be hard to absorb.

I expect the US China Trade war will go on for many months as President Trump fundamentally does not understand the Chinese mindset. China has felt oppressed by the West for many years and the idea of a foreign nation dictating to them how their National laws should be written is not acceptable.

If you watch China travel videos on YouTube by Western travellers and long term residents, the Chinese attitude to Westerners by the Chinese population has significantly diminished in recent months.

As an example, Toshiba label printers are 100% manufactured in Malaysia, a non tariff country. The industry leader, Zebra label printers are 100% manufactured in China. Zebra label printers are already premium priced to Toshiba and now the price gap just got 25% wider.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Lexmark product pricing as their product is 100% manufactured in China.

Another side affect could be layoffs and or salary frozen. Just like the good old days as your company will not be able to raise maintenance prices until next year.

I have a couple of Toshiba parts right in front of me.

                                Sensor - Made in Malaysia
                                Sensor - Made in Korea
                                Developer - Made in China
Feed Rollers - Made in China
Imaging Drum - Made in China
Fuser Roller - Made in China
                                Toner- Made in the USA

Obviously copier parts are made in many countries around the world and there is the real risk that the cost of some copier/ printer parts will soon increase negatively effecting profitability from the Service Dept.

From a sales point of view, all inclusive cpc rates might soon be forced to increase on new multi year contract commitments.
