U.S. Cuts $231 Million Deal To Provide 15-Minute COVID-19 At-Home Tests
The Biden administration has made a $231.8 million deal with an Australian company to boost availability of the first at-home rapid test for the coronavirus which causes COVID-19 that is available without a prescription. The test, made by Ellume, can send results to a smartphone within 15 minutes of receiving a sample.
The Food and Drug Administration gave emergency authorization to Ellume's rapid test in December, after it showed 96% accuracy after 15 minutes in a U.S. clinical study. Those trials included both adults and children of ages 2 years and older.
In a press release, the company said its contract, with the U.S. Defense Department, will help fund construction of Ellume's first manufacturing plant in the U.S. Once completed, it will produce more than 500,000 tests per day, according to the company.
The test uses a relatively short nasal swab to collect a sample. The sample is put into a digital analyzer linked to a smartphone app. In December, the company told NPR that the test would be available for about $30.
As part of the new contract, Ellume has committed to providing 8.5 million tests to the federal government, said Andy Slavitt, senior adviser to the White House COVID-19 Response Team.
Suzanne Sterns, a spokesperson for Ellume, told NPR the company "will be delivering 100,000 tests per month from the Australian manufacturing facility until the U.S. facility is built. At full capacity, the U.S facility will be able to produce up to 19 million tests per month. The 8.5M tests for the US government is a portion of the overall manufacturing."
"The first shipment of product to the DOD and HHS will commence in February," Sterns said, "with 100,000 tests to be shipped to the US Government by the end of the month."
Sterns said the test is not yet commercially available in the U.S. or elsewhere, but that the company would "be making further announcements around [the] rollout and retail plans in the coming weeks."
The Biden administration is trying to bolster testing efforts in the U.S., the worst-hit country in the world, as new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus threaten to make it even more difficult to bring the pandemic under control.
The U.S. average daily testing rate now stands at 550 per 100,000 people, according to a seven-day moving average computed by Johns Hopkins University. That rate compares well with those of a number of smaller countries, but it sharply lags the U.K. — another nation hit hard by the pandemic — which has been testing an average of 986 people per 100,000.
Because of the expected $30 cost and the need for a smartphone to receive results, this particular test is unlikely to be the game-changer several public health experts have been calling for — a test that families could use routinely at home before leaving the house, to prevent silent spread.
The Ellume contract is "a step in the right direction towards identifying fast tools that can actually help serve to identify and slow spread," says Dr. Michael Mina, a Harvard epidemiologist who has been a vocal advocate for widespread rapid tests.
What's needed, he says, are "tests that are highly accessible, abundant, can be used frequently, provide immediately actionable results and are $5 [or less] per test. A test that does not meet each of these [criteria] will not perform well as a public health test to fight this pandemic."
Discussing the new agreement in a news conference Monday, Slavitt said he hopes the cost of the test will come down.
"Things that are not low-cost and accessible don't do us all the good we need," he said.
But it will take more production capacity to bring that cost down — creating what Slavitt called a "chicken and egg problem" that the Ellume deal could help solve. At the same time, he added, "we know there are efforts to create even lower-cost and more innovative approaches, and we welcome those."
It's important for federal, state and local governments to help make coronavirus tests more affordable, Slavitt said, adding that "life doesn't change" until tests and vaccines become ubiquitous.

Airline and airport workers are praising a new rule that authorizes the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to fine passengers who refuse to wear masks.
Labor unions and airport administrators for months have been calling on the federal government to impose nationwide health policies for air travel.
"Our union has been advocating for almost a year for a federal mask mandate in aviation. A federal mandate with public messaging and clear enforcement mechanisms for federal agencies like TSA will go far to keeping everyone safe," Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents nearly 50,000 employees at 17 airlines, said in a statement Monday.
A spokesperson for the Service Employees International Union, which counts tens of thousands of airport workers among its members, called the mandate a "good first step," while adding that workers need more help with training, staffing and personal protective equipment.
The TSA rule, which takes effect Tuesday and will remain active through May 11, stems from a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) order that requires mask-wearing at transportation hubs.
An executive order from President Biden on his first full day in office directed federal agencies to "immediately take action" to mandate the use of masks in airports, on trains, on intercity bus services and on ferries.
The TSA can now require travelers to wear masks, deny entry or boarding to a passenger who refuses to wear one and hit passengers with a civil penalty if they refuse to comply.Comment

Novavax, feds agree to make COVID vaccine at new Montreal facility
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced plans to manufacture Novavax Inc.’s COVID-19 vaccine in Canada, making it the first coronavirus shot that will be produced in the country.
Canada has signed a memorandum of understanding with Maryland-based Novavax “to pursue the production” of the vaccine at a facility being built in Montreal by the National Research Council, a government agency, according to a statement Tuesday from the Canadian leader. Vaccine production is set to begin in late July.
“Since the beginning of the pandemic, our top priority has been the health and safety of all Canadians,” Trudeau said. “We are investing in our biomanufacturing capacity so that we have the made-in-Canada vaccines and treatments we need to protect Canadians.”
Canadian public-health authorities have yet to approve the Novavax vaccine. The Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE and Moderna Inc. COVID-19 vaccines are the only two vaccines that have received regulatory approval. Submissions from AstraZeneca Plc and Johnson & Johnson are also currently being considered for authorization.
Trudeau also announced on Tuesday that the government is providing $25 million (US$19.5 million) to Vancouver-based Precision Nanosystems Inc. to build a factory that could manufacture 240 million doses per year.Comment

Biden administration announces direct vaccine shipments to pharmacies
By Kevin Liptak, Sara Murray and Betsy Klein, CNN
Updated 1:25 PM EST, Tue February 02, 2021
(CNN)The Biden administration announced Tuesday it will begin direct shipments of coronavirus vaccines to retail pharmacies next week, expanding points of access for Americans to receive shots as concerns about variants of the virus expand.
"Millions of Americans turn to their local pharmacies every day for their medicines, flu shots, and much more. And pharmacies are readily accessible in most communities, with most Americans living within five miles of a pharmacy," White House Covid-19 response coordinator Jeff Zients said in a briefing.
The program, which will begin rolling out February 11, will start at about 6,500 stores that will receive a total of 1 million doses before eventually expanding, Zients said.
The administration also announced it is increasing the weekly allocation of vaccines going to states, tribes and territories by an additional 5%, bringing the weekly total of vaccines purchased per week a minimum of 10.5 million.Comment

How Can We Trust Him? Fauci Flip-Flops on Yet Another COVID Masking Issue

How Can We Trust Him? Fauci Flip-Flops on Yet Another COVID Masking Issue
Masks don’t work. Masks work.
COVID-19 doesn’t spread from asymptomatic carriers. COVID-19 does spread from asymptomatic carriers.
All schools need to be closed to prevent COVID transmission. Schools don’t have a significant impact on COVID transmission.
Despite appearing to be polar opposites, what do all of these statements have in common? According to the Washington Examiner, these are all opinions Dr. Anthony Fauci has held at some point in time. Even if he wasn’t leading the White House’s coronavirus response team, this level of flip-flopping would be a cause for concern.
However, the extent of Fauci’s power has caused real-life harm. The Examiner reported that Fauci resisted months of “President Trump and lawmakers demanding that schools must open and warning that the effects from lockdowns could be devastating.”
“Studies from the U.S. and abroad have already shown that keeping children from schools has had serious consequences, with suicides among youths rising in Wisconsin … and an overall increase of mental health-related emergency department visits for youths across the U.S.”
Now, Fauci is once again talking out of both sides of his mouth, this time on the issue of double-masking.
Breitbart reported that on Jan. 25, Fauci recommended that Americans wear multiple masks at once, “claiming that it only made ‘common sense’ to have another layer of protection.”
Typically, Fauci takes a few weeks or months before he revises a recommendation. This time, it only took until Thursday, when he revised his recommendation by claiming that there is “no data that indicates that [double-masking] is going to make a difference,” according to Breitbart.
I empathize with the experts who have maintained intellectual integrity during these troubled times. Science is incapable of delivering all the answers in one fell swoop. Common knowledge is inevitably going to change, and what is considered to be “understood” scientifically will have to be modified.
As long as the experts driving the response to COVID-19 are able to acknowledge their own faults as people and keep their minds from going crazy with power, Americans (and all people, really) would be more inclined to trust them.
Personally, I joined Moderna’s Phase 3 vaccine trial to help put a stop to the pandemic once and for all. It’s the type of engagement between experts and the community that is both healthy and productive.
Unfortunately, Fauci has not conducted himself like a responsible scientist.
His recommendations are more like proclamations and are framed as if they are an irrefutable truth. He lambasts anyone who criticizes or disagrees with him (even if he’s wrong), and shifts blame for public policy problems away from his own actions.
Even worse is that he rarely acknowledges when he was previously wrong. He merely shifts his recommendation and pretends that the previous one never existed.
No wonder the American people are growing increasingly skeptical of him, not even mentioning how much he tends to play politics.

BOMBSHELL! Facebook and American Journal of Medicine Admit They Were Wrong About HCQ
290,000 Americans would still be alive right now if the use of hydroxychloroquine treatment would have been approved for use in the USA as early as August 2020 for COVID-19 treatment.
During that month, there were only 150,000 people who have died because of the virus. Now, it stands at more than 450,000 fatalities.
And there was even official news that countries during that time that used hydroxychloroquine treatment had 79 percent less mortality than countries that didn't use it against the virus.
BUT BUT Trump was SHIT upon for suggesting the us of it. Many lives could have been saved ... but the MSM and socialists damned him for it!
c19study.com website.
Now we know that they were wrong. Certainly, many of us knew that they were wrong all along, but they couldn't allow this virus to go away that fast. They needed it to last much longer so they could push people to get behind Joe Biden and his non-existent plan to tackle the virus.
This erroneous attitude towards this longtime malaria treatment led to the health tragedy that is affecting American society now. What they espoused against its usage should be investigated to the full extent of the law according to how they should be implicated in the additional hundreds of thousands of deaths from COVID since then.
But with the Democrats in charge, it is almost guaranteed that nothing is going to come of this. They are literally going to get away with the genecide.
