If you just watched the DND briefing about the Kabul attacks, you would have heard from the US General in Kabul that there is just no way for the Marines at the airport barriers to not get up close and personal with people trying to enter the airfield. Regretfully, this makes them vulnerable to suicide bombers.

US Forces are constantly trying to extend the airport perimeter barriers.

No US President has direct command of what happens at those gates on an hourly basis.

The US is preparing to defend against multiple other attacks over the remaining four days.
