Yes...it is a good thing.
Why would it not be?

Because as a right, every whack job without a sanity filter gets to take their guns to the nearest elementary school and kill a few innocent children and then take the coward's way out for their actions rather than facing the consequences.

As a privilege, the gun can be taken away and that's enough to deter the average person. If something happens beyond having the privilege taken away then that person was determined to make this shit go down and whether it was a right or a privilege doesn't matter.

I think it was mentioned previously by someone else, but I CBF to read back in the thread - a little bit of education goes a long way, especially when it comes to firearms.

And yes indeed they are cowards for killing themselves before they can be tried and convicted. Many who go on shooting sprees will deliberately aim toward police knowing they will be put down. Gangs are another problem.
However.........they are a very small portion of our society and here you wish the rest to just roll over and give up a freedom on account of that.

Presently, it is a right and should be revised to be a privilege, as is the privilege of driving. If you can't handle the responsibility, you should not be entitled to the privilege.

Gangs are their own problem in and of themselves, they'll find a way to cause shit one way or another and bear no relevance to this discussion. A life of crime is a life of crime whether it's drugs, assault or anything really - can't stop the shit from going down when they want it to go down.

A freedom is not a right, a freedom is a privilege as well. I have the freedom to drive all I want now that I've earned the privilege of driving. That seems to be a common misconception, that all freedoms are rights. Now don't get me wrong, there are many freedoms which are rights, such as freedom of speech etc., however, people don't seem to realize that it's a separate entity. They just look at the word "freedom" and automatically associate it with "right". As I said, the original amendment served its purpose when it was first drafted up over ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO. A simple revision would not taint the freedom of owning a gun if one so desired, but would make it a privilege to do so, and thus give someone proven incapable of handling a firearm in a responsible manner a chance to be properly educated if not just having their privilege revoked.

I could not anymore possibly disagree that it needs to be changed. I wouldn't change one word of the Constitution right now and should rights be taken away by any other means than those drawn up in the Constitution.......amendment....woe betide. That's not something you flip an Executive Order out to do.

I once read an article that there was some info handed to all americans leaving the US that my country was a dangerous place to be apparently because all of us drive like maniacs (and I honestly can vouch for that).

On the other hand, I think your society is utterly fucked up when you decide who can drive and who cannot based on their hability to maneuver a vehicle and learn the traffic rules, but will happily put a gun on any fucknut's hands who wants to have a gun (whether it's a 9mm or a semi-auto).

So I'm thinking, if I ever decide to go to the US, will I be also warned that I can get shot while waiting in line to buy a burger?

Maybe.
Still, the U.S.A. is pretty large compared to a lot of other countries, so the chance of getting shot while waiting for a burger is essentially zero for the vast majority of people here. So, unless you are unlucky or act like a moron, you'd probably be perfectly safe if you visited.

I live in Oklahoma. We have an open carry law. That means you can wear it on your belt in public. You know what? I don't ever see anyone doing that.

I have to ask, if guns are just for protection, why the hell would you need an assualt rifle? So, who cares if they are banned? There are a thousand other kinds of guns you can buy and still protect yourself.
And why do you need a high capacity clip? If the first ten rounds don't stop the person you are protecting yourself from, how are twenty more going to help? Maybe a little traget practice is what you need.
