Maryland lawmakers pass strict gun control bill
Md. lawmakers pass strict gun control bill
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's already-strong gun laws will become among the strictest in the nation with a measure passed by the General Assembly Thursday, sending the bill to the Democratic governor who proposed the legislation in the aftermath of December's massacre at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.
The state Senate voted 28-19 for final passage, agreeing to a number of changes the House of Delegates approved Wednesday.
The measure would require people who buy a handgun to submit fingerprints to state police, bans 45 types of assault weapons, and limits gun magazines to 10 bullets. It also addresses firearms access for the mentally ill.
Maryland will become the first state in nearly 20 years to require potential handgun buyers to submit fingerprints to state police. Only five other states have a similar requirement: Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.
Gun control advocates say the fingerprinting requirement will help keep guns away from criminals, because it will make people reluctant to buy firearms for those who are not allowed to have them. Opponents say the bill erodes Second Amendment rights and ultimately penalizes law-abiding citizens without focusing on lawbreakers.
Although the measure bans 45 types of assault weapons, people who own them now will be able to keep them. People who order the weapons before Oct. 1, when the law would take effect, also would be able to keep them.
Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, who spoke of his own gun collection, noted that people will be able to keep the guns they have, even the assault weapons under the ban.
"It doesn't affect a single gun that anybody has," Miller, D-Calvert, said, noting shotguns and rifles are not affected.

Texas mourners' plea: 'Chase 'em down, bring 'em to justice'
Kaufman County, Texas (CNN) -- The memorial service Thursday for a slain Texas prosecutor and his wife was somber, but one phrase made mourners erupt in applause.
"Chase 'em down. Go get 'em. Bring 'em to justice," said Chris Heisler, who led the service, drawing cheers and whistles from the crowd. "Take them out of the hole they come from."
The emotional plea came as investigators search for suspects in the unsolved killings of two prosecutors that have shaken this Texas county and drawn national attention.
Before the memorial, Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a similar appeal, calling the slayings "direct attacks on the core of our civil society" and announcing that authorities were offering a new reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the killers.
"These are heinous crimes, and they've affected not just Texans but people across the country who respect the rule of law," Perry told reporters.
District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, died in a weekend shooting at their home, almost exactly two months after McLelland's chief felony prosecutor, Mark Hasse, died in a daytime shooting outside the county courthouse.Leave a comment:

I think the cartoon is saying is that per capita gun ownership is down, but, there are more multiple gun owners. So, sales may be up, but, they are all being bought by the same people.Leave a comment:

You almost got it right , the government failing is not a fear of theirs, it is a fantasy. Here you go, take a ride on the crazy train, if you dare. Caution, if you go through it all in one sitting, you may not be able to work today.

Re: Gun Control
The point is you cannot control what people do with guns once they get them. As I tried to explain to in my famous Robert Burns poem ... shit happens despite any one's best plans.
This is why in your family guns are securely stowed but just down the street they could be in the easy reach of a 13 year old.
In other words, freedom isn't free, you must be prepared to fight to keep it.
I actually kind of like this one. If the government succeeds in collapsing itself this guy won't look so crazy.Leave a comment:
