    Canon 6221 copy quality problem

    Help!

I'm still trying to keep my 6221 alive. It has been a steady work horse but has needed TLC recently. We don't use a copier very much (maybe 50 - 100 pages a day) so I don't really want to invest in a replacement right now.

I have recently changed the teflon heat roller, upper/lower separator fingers and the drum unit. It has been making excellent copies until just lately.

The copies now are coming out with 3 faded white streaks about 1/2" wide across the pages. The streaks are perpendicular to the fuser rollers.

I read a description of the basic copier operation and think that this problem has something to do with the electrical charge either in the drum unit or the corona wire.

I recently replaced the complete drum unit. I have not ever changed the corona wire(s), but clean it often.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Bill

    Dakaty,
You are on the right track with the primary charge. All it takes is a single fiber smaller than a hair to cause the problem you describe. To remove the primary charge unit: remove the drum, slide the cleaner most of the way out, carefully release the plastic tang that retains the corona unit on the rear drum unit frame, carefully slide the primary charge unit out the back of the drum unit.

To clean the primary wire and grid: carefully release and don't lose the (4) 3mm long springs on the corners of the grid (observe how it is installed-it won't reinstall properly if the grid is on reversed), spread the grid just enough to remove it from the charge unit, using a Q-tip & a drop of alcohol carefully wipe the whole length of the primary charge wire, using a lint free cloth & alcohol carefully wipe the grid, using a clean toothbrush & bright light remove any lint that may be left on the grid, reinstall the grid, install the springs. Also check for lint in the gap in the drum unit where you removed the charge unit (don't wipe the drum).

To reinstall: slide out the cleaner, reinsert the corona unit from the rear drum frame, line up the front alignment pins, lock the plastic tang, slide in the corona cleaner, reinsert the drum unit.

Also check the transfer/separation unit for lint. On the transport unit (directly below the drum) remove the rectangular black cover (~25mm x ~50mm), lower the bed handle, slide out the s/t corona unit. You can use canned air to blow out any dust, toner, or lint. You can clean the transfer wire with the Q-tip and a drop of alcohol through the slot in the bottom of the corona unit. Slide out the separation static eliminator (sometimes called a sawtooth) and clean it with the toothbrush dry. Make sure that the transfer wire cleaner is at the front of the s/t unit before reinstalling it.

Another possibility is a developing problem. Release the developing unit handle and draw out the developing unit (the one that holds the toner). Be careful not to touch the roller covered with toner. Take a look at that roller to see if it is covered evenly with toner over it's entire length. Any faint areas will show up as faint areas in the copies. Check back if it's a developing issue. There are some easy things that you can do. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

        Blackcat

I followed your basic instructions and am now getting great copies again.

I worked on it late Friday night and because the office lighting is not that good (and my eyes are getting older), I did not remove the tiny springs and the screen. I did clean it as best I could (it looked clean as new to begin with) and used lots of compressed canned air to blow out any foreign matter.

So far real good, great copies all day!! I will keep your notes in the event the problem comes up again.

Thanks for your time and help.

        Bill

Congratulations! I've probably lost a dozen of those little grid springs over the years. Whenever I change a drum unit I usually scavenge those springs just for those occasions when I lose one. =^..^=

hi.i think the transfer corona has a charge leakage.&you can check the drum driving assembly.or there's something wrong with sleeve magnet roller.
i wish you good luck & new machine
