    Canon 2880i vertical banding

    Seeking advice on a C2880 / C3380.

The prints have uneven density and produces this vertical banding. Sample scans CanonPrintQuality.pdf

ITB and black drum was replaced within a year.
Transfer cleaner unit, Secondary Transfer Roller, Fixing Film, Pressure roller, and pressure roller bearings were replaced recently.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Not having worked on Canon for a few years I can't help a lot, but I can help rule things out.

It's probably not paper drive, since the image is not compressed or expanded.
It's probably not developer drive since all colors seem to be affected equally.
    It's probably not laser related.
It's probably not primary charge loss. That produces solid color background.

You might be losing developer bias, primary transfer or secondary transfer. All those produce lighter images. This could be something to do with the contacts, or something in the unit itself.

    Sorry so general. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I would rule out the drums causing the issue as it's happening on all colours.

Check that transfer roller is sitting correctly.

Check the ITB life, replace it if over 200% or if the machine is making an unusual groaning type noise.

There could be a high voltage contact bent out of place on the itb assembly. Check where the 2nd transfer roller comes in contact with itb assy. On the front operator side of the itb assy. It is the contact for the other 2nd transfer roller inside the itb assembly.

Otherwise some thing inside may be broken with that roller.

Is good image on the belt with a hard stop?

        Hope this helps!

OEM or generic toners? There are some toners out there that are just horrible for those machine, will kill c/q and ruin drums, if you switch from oem to generic or vice verse, c/q will go south for a few hundred copies. Run the gradation mode, the quick one first to see if c/q improves, or run the full mode and see if there is any difference. Good Luck.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
Eliminating some of the possibilities is very helpful.

With the hard stop test, I can see the missing toner bands left on the ITB where it bypassed the paper.
The image on the belt before it hits the Secondary Transfer outside Roller is good.

No change with the Quick Gradation adjustment.
Full Adjust is not able to scan the test print due to the poor copy quality.

I did a quick look at the contacts and they appear to be clean. I need to perform a more thorough inspection of the High Voltage Contacts and verify that they are making contact.

The machine is using generic toners. I'm not sure when the switch occurred but the toners are near full and show a lot of life left. I believe the toners did work for a few hundred copies. Occasionally there will be an issue loose toner. The cheap toner may be the issue.

Switching to OEM toner, rechecking the ITB position and High Voltage contacts are the next steps.

Haven't had much time to mess with the copier but here's an update.

Switched to OEM toners for all colors (CYMK).
              Processed around 100 pages.
              No improvement in copy quality.
Once again, Full Gradation adjustment will not complete.

The ITB was replaced last February with an OEM unit.
Even though the image is good on the ITB, could the unit still be defective?

Tonersniffer's post led me to do some searching. This old post has some good info http://www.copytechnet.com/forums/ca...rint-help.html
I'll follow up with when I get around to checking the contacts.

If the image is good on the ITB then you can rule that out.

Have you updated the system software? if not do this ASAP.
