Canon IR 550 E100 error code:

    Hi folks,
    I'm new here.
Have been lurking for a while and found lots of good info.
    Question;
I have a Canon IR 550 with a bookletmaker finisher and 2.5 million copies on it. I'm getting an occasional E100 error code.
I turn it off, wait, then turn it on again and wait for warm up to complete it goes back to E100 code.
However,...(sometimes) I can turn it on and while it's still warming up, I'll hit the copy key and punch in a copy amount. Then it will boot up and run for a while (1000 copies or so) before going back to the E100 code again.
Any idea what this might be and how to fix it?
I checked the main front door switch as recomended and that seemes to be ok. My service tech says I need some part that costs between $2000 and $3000 if he can even find one. I'm suspicious that he just doesn't want to work on it anymore and wants me to buy a new copier.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Well Dana,
E100 is a laser error, and it might need a laser unit. And it might cost $2000 to $3000 dollars for a new laser.

But it might not need the laser unit. Another cause for the laser code could be a sticky linkage that opens the laser unit shutter when the front door is closed. That is the most common cause as a matter of fact. The laser shutter is a protective feature designed to prevent accidental exposure to laser light while you're removing jams. In fact it's nearly impossible to get exposed to laser light.

If it were me, I'd get a second opinion. You could run up 15 hours of labor before you even get close to the cost of a laser unit. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

hi dana .you are welcome in our world.as mr blackcat say ther is amalfunction in the laser unit itself or the shutter mechanism but ther is another point you have to check the drum unit if there is something broken so it doesn't activate the laser unit shutter & take a look on the reflecting mirror inside the laser box & clean it with adry cloth.i hope it is helpfull dana.i wish you good luck.

Yeah, I agree with Montana and the Cat.
I've seen where to beam detect mirror get so dirty you can hardly tell its a mirror. Have the tech clean the BD mirror while he's checking the laser shutter.
