    iPG-825, 03030031-2F2A

For the last couple weeks this machine has been ejecting the paper rolls accompanied by 03010000-2E3E, 03010000-2E3D errors, and "!Roll 1 (upper) jam. Lift the release lever." The problem occurred when awakening from sleep mode or when loading the other paper roll (whichever: upper or lower). I've already replaced all of the paper feed sensors. It is so intermittent that I have left with confidence that I fixed something ... when I haven't really fixed anything.

Today it pulled 03030031-2F2A. The feed roller encoder sensor was a little dusty but cleaning didn't help. The encoder wheel is clean and intact. If I remove the feed drive belt, the feed motor makes no attempt to rotate during initialization, and errors out within 15 seconds. The 32vdc supply voltage (J2801 pin2 and pin5) comes in at 29.7vdc, but I don't think that would totally stop the motor. I can feel two very small twitches from the drive pulley during initialization. Regardless of the state of the encoder sensor (blocked versus unblocked) the motor should still spin up.

So I've replaced a few failed pulse motors ... but not many. Most of the time it's not the motor, but the drive circuit that fails (main controller). Has anybody seen this sequence of codes? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Yeah that's kinda what I thought. It's pretty lonely out there servicing the Canon iPF's. I'm the only one stupid enough to not refuse the calls entirely. =^..^=

If anybody is watching this thread, this machine is rapidly becoming a money pit ... on in the words of my technical advisor a "rabbit hole".

It's got the new feed motor and main controller, and still will not complete initialization without the 2F2A code or let me load paper. In addition, if I enter service mode and attempt a gap calibration the carriage shoots to the left end and gives a 2F13 error.

My advisor is recommending a carriage and flat cable assembly, which will get done tomorrow.

If I understand the logic here, the diagnostic errors are so poorly engineered that quite often the error that I am recording occurred two or three steps after the actual fault that stopped the initialization sequence.

Surprise conclusion: Today I brought out the carriage, flat cable assembly, encoder strip, and a printhead (all scavenged from a donor).

Looking at my box of parts I concluded that the easiest to try was the printhead. This particular printhead was giving streaks in the magenta in it's original home. It went through a very long drawn out ink purge and repeated nozzle checks, and a few 03030031-2F2F codes, and would not let me print, but with entirely different errors! When I booted into service mode I could load paper (both rolls!), and got a real actual print!

Admittedly it was a lousy print, and magenta was nearly entirely absent ... but all the other errors are gone! I got a new PF-03 printhead shipped out for tomorrow. The end!

Who would have thought that you could get all these seemingly unrelated errors and jams from a faulty printhead!?:

"!Roll 1 (upper) jam. Lift the release lever."
"!Roll 2 (lower) jam. Lift the release lever."
        03010000-2E3E
        03010000-2E3D
        03030031-2F2A (feed motor encoder error)
        03030031-2F13

You've gotta just love Canon's diagnostic codes. It might as well have said "Broken [You figure it out]"

If anyone deserves a star for solving their own problem then this is the case! Do not envy those who tread here.

Just a follow up: two weeks later it started pulling 03030031-2F2F errors.

Canon recommended that we replace all the same part AGAIN! Rather that sink any further into this morass, management has elected to replace this plotter with a similar model. =^..^=
