    [Misc] IR-2020 Faint line of output across page

    Hello all. Having an odd issue with our Canon IR-2020 - as shown in the screenshot, it prints perfectly fine except for a missing strip near the top of the page where toner is barely being applied. This affects both black and white and color prints.

    Things that have been tried prior to my taking over the issue:


    • Swapping all drums
    • Changing black toner
    • cleaning the laser glass
    • performing maintenance from the system options


    We have limited supplies on hand for this printer and would like to narrow down the issue before sourcing more parts. Did I mention this printer lives at a remote station in Antarctica?
    Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

    SWAPPED with NEW or USED?

    what about transfer roller/ITB?

    What is life on fuser?

    have you cleaned the PCR's? **HINT to follow**

    is there anything blocking laser beam? fuzz .. zoom?

    COLD could be a major factor ..

    we need more info Brother..

    could you post the first 5 pages from config report?

    Do you have the service manual?

      If what Phil posted checks out then next step is dump the old toner in Dev unit (mono componet, no developer used in this model)
      Then scrub mag roller with scotchbrite pad. Put NEW toner in developer unit. Check doctor blade, etc when you have developer unit apart to dump old toner.

        OK the hint.....


        look in the PCU at the Primary Charge Roller

        if you see a line or spots on the PCR:

        pull the PCR... take some Nu Finish car polish

        apply thin coat to PCR... clean the roller w/ soft cloth...

        buff it so it shines.. if marks are still on roller

        reapply and buff...

        when the roller looks good reinstall and test

        it should remove the marks and the print should be bolder

          Enter the service mode of Canon C2020
          1. SETTING REGISTRATION 28 SETTING REGISTRATION
          2. MODE LIST - COPY - TEST - PG: 6 and OK press START BUTTON
          3. MODE LIST - COPY - TEST - PG: 10 and OK press START BUTTON.


          Send picture of test 6 and test 10 to see if it is a problem of DEVELOPER unit or drum unit

              Appreciate the replies all. This is a problem I inherited when I got down here and has vexed several of our techs previously. Balmy -14C outside today.

              COLD could be a major factor .. The printer has been in a temperature controlled office ~ 75 degrees for the last few years. It IS extremely dry here however.

              could you post the first 5 pages from config report? Looked for a way to export / print this on the 2020 - haven't found yet. Will try again later today.

              Do you have the service manual? We do now!

                Environment switch (SW17)


                hello good night the canon printer is located in the antarctica ?? It is a place that is a very cold climate, you have to check the Environment Settings (ENV-SET) Temperature, humidity, environmental heater,
                condensation, acquisition of records.
                in the printer "activate the Environment switch (SW17)"

                    Think I saw some mention of color in this thread, I was talking about the old B&W model. If this is a color model disregard my earlier post

                      It is indeed a color model. Appreciate the followup.

                      Have been busy with other tasks getting people out the door to Pole but will update when I try some of these ideas.

                        Ok, so you say your machine is a IR2020 but you have swapped "drums" so I assume your machine is a colour IRA C2020? (mono Canons on have 1 drum)

                        Your print sample is the counter print (mono) so your issue of the white/blank band can ONLY be caused be the black drum unit or a dirty laser glass (black)

                        So:

                        (1) Have you fitted a new black drum?
                        (2) You say you have cleaned the laser glass, how did you perform this?

                          This is the color version of the printer - we have replaced the black drum once with no effect. We have also replaced the magenta drum as it was end of life.

                          We cleaned the laser glass by going into the service mode level 1, opening the shutters (SHUT-OPEN command), removing the drum, and then using the laser glass cleaning tool on the front door. It is possible this needs to be done again / harder / better / faster / stronger.

                            Do you know how to take out the test page? check the service manual on the type of test page

                              Hi all, here are the results of the Page 6 and page 10 tests.
                              I tried cleaning the black laser glass (again) using the tool but the line remains. Thinking it may be a developer issue?
