    Canon ir1600

we receive a call on a canon ir1600 for dark lines on copies. Typical drum blade problem i thought. went on service call to see that there were streaks on the rear of the drum. Removed the drum from the unit only to see the drum cleaning unit was packed full of toner,as if the toner augor was broken. vacuumed out the unit. augor checked out ok. Replaced the drum blade and that appeared to take care of the problem. About a month later we received another call from the same customer.
Again, same problem. streaks on the rear end of the drum. performed same service, cleaned drum unit and replace drum blade. one month later same problem. now I'm beginning to think its the dv spacers or the doc blade. the doc blade did appear to be worn more on the rear end. Has anyone had to replace the dv spacer or the doc blade or the whole dv unit on this machine? by the way this machine has 90k copies.
    please respond. thanks

I don't have a lot of experience with these but, I thought that the waste toner was stored in the drum unit itself. The yield on the drum is 21k and 150k for the developer unit according to the service guide. Have you tried a new drum unit?

totoro is right, if the drum is packed with toner the replace drum light should come on, i would install a new drum unit

I've seen this plenty of times.
When this happens you either need to replace dev cylinder, blade and spacers....OR a new dev.
You'll just keep going through drums otherwise.

As a rule I never vacuum out a drum anymore, too many return trips in that path. I always go with a new drum. I have had to replace the developers in these machines, but usually for the opposite reason, toner buildup on the doctor blade causing void lines in the print. Same advice here, replace the developer, I have never had any good outcome from the 1600 or the 1670 developer "surgery".

You can still use the drum...you just need to strip it and clean it up and clean(or replace)the transfer roller.

I've always refurbed the 1600 devs as opposed to new units...my boss used to only change the part that he thought was causing thissue...but I eventually brought him around to my way of thinking...if you're going to touch the dev at all you may as well do the cylinder, blade, bearings and spacers.
For that issue with voids and streaks I've had great results Mr.Fixit...it's a messy pain in the butt job though.
