When running A3 with heavy coverage of light colour (orange) I am getting a black background (swirly lines) at the front edge. Have changed drums but no joy. Any ideas?

Are you setting up the cassette for heavy stock? It adjusts the transfer and sep currents for heavy stock. If it is on the lead edge the paper may be riding up and needs more sep current.
Also, how many copies since the last developer change? The black background may indicate time for new developer. -

this is not the CLC u are thinking of /
it is a iR5185 =in disguise / IN EURO they call it CLC Canon sales strategy**Knowledge is time consuming, exhausting and costly for a trained Tech.**Comment

Background of Swirly edge lines could mean your HVT box is bad>
they control the upstream and down stream voltages for the cleaning rollers in Drums
if issue is on Copies and Prints> see below
Depending on what color is causing the background
troubleshoot the problem by swapping around the Lasers from one color station to the other
but you must remember to input the Laser values in service mode which are printed on top of the Laser.
Ensure that the Drum Ground contact makes a good connection with the grounding pin on the machine frame. Replace the contact if it is badly deformed. on front door-see pic example

how often do u do a full calibration
post some single color PG5 PRINTS/
And post pic of your issue**Knowledge is time consuming, exhausting and costly for a trained Tech.**Comment

if the ITB cleaning Blade was poor ,
it would effect all Colors while cleaning off ITB
If background issue is from one color, there are procedures that need to be followed for it**Knowledge is time consuming, exhausting and costly for a trained Tech.**Comment

oops, my mistake. I did think he was talking about a CLC5100, thanks for making that clearer.
Can you give more info about the "front edge". Do you mean as you are looking at a big stack of paper, black swirls can only be seen on the edge. Or do you mean background on just the front margin?
One other thing to check is the springs under the secondary transfer roller. Open the fuser drawer and lift the secondary transfer roller as if removing a jam. Those springs pop off or the frame breaks. Once this happens that unit won't sit against the ITB correctly changing the angle the paper goes through, which can cause marks on the lead edge of the paper or jamming.Comment
