Does it recognise the correct size in tray 2? If it does then it's not an area problem but a tray 1 fault.
In my experience this fault is nearly always caused by a break in the wiring on the tray size (sliding) block.

Am I missing something here? How about selecting paper tray settings > standard sizes > metric? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

if its only tray 1 reading wrong size, then change out the size detection sensors at rear of tray (the assembly with tray lift motor).
Had this the other day all other trays correct except tray 1.

Even if the machine is set to metric it will still pick up inch paper. I have a lot of machines with mixed letter size and A4 paper.
That has its own gremlins. Change the tray out or look for a problem on the tray.
                Whatever

Check if there's paper behind the tray and if the paper guides are in correct positions.
You can also try and swap tray 3 with tray 4 and see if the issues is related to the drawer.

if the tray and copier paper size settings are correct but its still showing 8 1/2 in the tray, you may have a broken wire in the PAPER SIZE DETECTION SECTION. I've highlighted the relevant part from the parts manual. there is a Technical document about this failure but I cant find it right now. ill keep looking...

Is tray 3 an LCT? If so, go into service mode, System 2 -> LCT Paper Size Setting -> A4LCT -> A4. Exit service mode, reboot copier.

Thanks; it's working now. I also had to go to LCT's built-in Size settings too, to change it to A4.

                              Thanks so much femaster
